One of the most pompous, cliche-laden, predictable pieces of crap to ever come out of Hollywood and win massive awards and praise.
Especially considering Sam Mendes and Conrad L. Hall's follow up movie was so much better.

no you didnt. you said: "I don't understand how a straight male could possibly enjoy this"
I know what I said.

I said that I have no desire to watch a movie about two gay cowboys
This is what I meant.
quote:
I don't understand how this straight male could possibly enjoy this
What I should have said.

Brokeback Mountain was great, but if you're a homophobe I guess it'd be impossible to enjoy. Don't see how it conveys pretense, tho.

The pretense is what you just described. Say it's great so that anybody who says they aren't interested you can call a homophobe.

I feel like any film that tries to tackle a huge social issue like homosexuality or racism is automatically praised for being a great movie no matter how great or shitty it was.

It really is a good movie with some beautiful shots. I watched it with a gay friend, probably never would have seen it otherwise. There's a very nice Anne Hathaway scene also

Exactly. Brokeback may or may not be a great movie but I just don't get the feeling that that is why it's being praised.

I was mostly working off this guy's statement:
quote:
Ive never seen it. I don't understand how a straight male could possibly enjoy this. Now if it was two hot cow girls thats a different story!
Also, let's consider that the short story that movie is based is an O. Henry award winner (highest award for short fiction). It already had a narrative of vivid, emotional impact in place before hollywood and its evil agenda could fabricate one. And you can hardly say that the SS was lavished praise because of its "edgy" social-issue plot. Literature has been way ahead of movies in that regard for decades.
But you're right CC, even though you've never seen it, it's probably because Heath Ledger died 3 years after its release.

Even take away the awkwardness of the ghey scenes it still was a really lousy movie- afterschool special type sentiment that all the "cool" people loved just for the hype and gheyness

The gay bashing military man actually being gay was a bit cliched Cdawg.

yeah, nevermind Gustavo Santaolalla's great score, the amazing cinematography, and Ledger's performance. Truly a terrible movie considering it was crafted masterfully at almost every filmmaking criteria.

You realize that you're dealing with the same sort of person who refuses to watch the NFL pregame show on NBC Sunday Night Football because they claim to hate Keith Olbermann because of his MSNBC program that they've probably never watched...

I'm not a homophobe, and I didn't like the movie. It seemed to me like a movie that was made just to be controversial, and that means I hate it in the same way I hate hippies.

And there you go.
I love it when people flaunt their ignorance.
