The Exorcist
Jaws
Alien
(these when I was in my 20s, lots of hype and sensation)

More recent
Schindler's List
(as a mature adult, I found this one's study of human evil, to be very disturbing maybe especially because this kind of stuff really happened in the 20th Century - also somewhat inspiring at the redemptive change in Schindler over time).

Well this thread went off the rails.

Movies that scared you as an ADULT...

The only movie I've seen as an afult that made it difficult for me to sleep the night I watched it was "Paranormal Activity".

Just saw The Witch last night, and RC described it as a film he "shouldn't be watching," and I agree.

That was an odd experience, and it just felt like the most evil thing I've ever seen So put that on the list of "Most disturbed" with Requiem, Breaking the Waves, The War Zone.

Most Scared - The Blair Witch Project left a mark at the end, that's for sure, recently Insidious, The Others, and maybe The Omen.

Among other things. It also deals with the pathetic sexual perversions of Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

Jacob's Ladder

Saw this movie at the theater in college- it STILL confuses me and has debatable parts and interpretations.

I'd say it's 60% confusing and 40% disturbing.

I was seriously messed up in the head after Requiem for a Dream. Mostly the part where the mom is going crazy taking the diet pills.

Exorcism of Emily Rose freaked me out too.

It is intentionally confusing but ultimately coherent. If I were to sum it up in two words, "nightmare simulator." Just thinking about the scene where Jessie yells, "Anybody in there, ANYBODY HOME?" literally sends chills down my spine, and I've watched it a dozen times. Great, great movie.

I haven't seen a scary movie in a long time but the movie Vacancy freaked me out some. I am not into that devil crap like The Exorcist and such.

"In the Mouth of Madness" and "The Blair Witch Project" both stayed with me long after I watched them.

I feel like this movie gets a bad wrap sometimes, but at the end when he's listening to his recorder with his wife in the room while they're moving and you hear his daughter talk......oh man. That gives me goosebumps every freaking time.

I recommend getting the audiobook (Blood & Smoke) and listen to King read it. Hands down the creepiest thing I ever heard and, as always, it's so much btter than the movie.
