His stand-up was cheesy and very dated(too PG rated) by the time he hit the scene. But he's a great actor for a comedian. I can't think of many former SNL actors who I'd put ahead of him. Don't confuse the success of Adam Sandler and Eddie Murphy movies with talent.
Bill Hader and Bill Murray are the only ones more talented in my opinion.

Plains, Trains and Automobiles- IMO was Good because of John Candy, same with Tommy Boy. Martin and Spade’s characters in those two movies could have been played by virtually any other actor and the movies would have still been great.
