Gaston killed the beast. Not very sympathetic.

What about the producer of The Truman Show? He keeps him inside a bubble, but he sets him up with a great life, pleases millions with the show, and cares for Truman.

But that's what he did. Remember, he uses antlers in all of his decorating. He kills animals. Plus, he saw the beast as competition for Belle. He wasn't evil by any means.

True.

So Ed Harris is now three characters on this list.

Harris plays the villain pretty well. I think Enemy at the Gates was his best.

Then he shouldn't be listed as a villain.

Michael Sullivan in Road To Pertition

Although road to peridition is probabaly the most underrated movie of all time, Michael Sullivan seems more like the hero than villain.

Freddy Krueger
He was the bastard child of a hundred maniacs. Not his fault.

You don't have to be evil to be the villain. Besides if you look at this thread, it has really evolved into antagonist more than villain.

What makes/who is or isn't a villain could be a thread that goes for a hundred pages.

I disagree. But for the sake of not derailing the thread, we can agree to disagree.

You can be a villain and not be evil.

...and while we're on the subject, if you are a fan of japanese movies, often they establish a villian early on and then by halfway through teh movie, they're not the 'villian' at all anymore.

see "nausicaa" and "princess mononoke" (anime).

that's one of the things i LOVE about japanese films..its not a cut-and-dry good guy vs. bad guy and circumstances could change their point of view. american movies..not so much.

Thats more just Miyazaki though. The only really evil character ever in his films was Mark Hamill in Laputa. Miyazaki is just a guy who doesn't believe in pure evil, but he believes that almost everyone has some redeeming characteristic.

Since he's the protagonist, doesn't that disqualify him from being a villain? This is also a reason I find Hannibal Lector a bad choice whenever people say he's one of the great film villains, since he directly helps Clarice find Buffalo Bill and has no intention of harming her. Just don't really get why Hannibal gets all the glory, but Bill is rarely mentioned in great villain conversations.

This is the argument Freauxzen and I got into a while back. He would start throwing Joseph Campbell at me and I would cite AFI. Its just best to walk away.
