This is Mortal Kombat. This franchise has killed off and brought back to life half of the cast of characters at least once. Shang Tsung said in the end that death is just another portal as the dead guys evaporated. They could easily be back.

It's pretty obvious that Shang Tsung is going to resurrect all of his minions.

Here's where I have issues with the story:

-Kung Lao. They flipped the script between Kung Lao and Liu Kang. In the games, Kung Lao is insanely insecure and jealous of Liu Kang. He even disguises himself as a guard to infiltrate the first tournament after Raiden explicitly says that only Liu Kang will represent the White Lotus. In my opinion, he died too early.

-Kano. They significantly toned down the level of hate Sonya and Jax have for Kano. Sonya's hate for Kano is obsessive. The game series Sonya would kill him on site without even hesitating if given the chance. Also, while I know Shang Tsung will resurrect him, Kano is a fricking cockroach - ridiculously hard to kill.

-Scorpion. You can't have Scorpion without Quan Chi. If that's the direction they want to go, then Hanzo just became a one-off.

I could see them going in a few different directions with the introduction of the following heroes:

-Johnny Cage. That's a no-brainer.

-Kenshi Takahashi. For those unfamiliar with him, he is the reason Shang Tsung has such a long lifespan. He is tricked into retrieving a family heirloom (katana) that has the souls of his ancestors. Shang Tsung consumes many of them and the resulting psychic feedback blinds Kenshi but gives him telepathic and telekinetic abilities. He is also cursed, nearly 700 years old (14th century).

-Princess Kitana. I could see the writers having her in exile on Earth. That would explain how Mileena was there but not Kitana. Shang Tsung can just make another clone (and he has made multiple copies of her)

-Kuai Liang. This one will be the hardest for them to reconcile, as in the games he is the younger brother of Bi Han and enters the Outworld (second) tournament to find his brother's killer. Decades later he makes peace with Hanzo and the Shirai Ryu.

-Kung Jin. Since Kung Lao is now dead, this is where you introduce his nephew. He'd have to be a lot older in the sequel than he is in the games (in the games he is 5 when Kung Lao is killed). This also gives them the woke angle they need since Jin is gay.

-Nightwolf. They could either use Grey Cloud (Nightwolf from the games) or a different version. Both his predecessor and successor are women.

-Qu'atal (Kotal). Kotal has been both hero and villain in the games. For those familiar with Mortal Kombat X and 11, he is Jade's fiancee and leads the Osh Tekk (basically they are the Outworld version of the Mayan Gods)

it’s probably the best you can do to adapt mortal kombat to film.

No, the best you can do is make it a series like Game of Thrones. Think about it, Season 1 with 10 episodes would look like this:

Episode 1: Introduce the underlying background, 6 realms, Elder Gods, etc. Fall of Edenia, time jump 9,500 years.

Episode 2: Introduce the Mortal Kombat tournament and White Lotus societies, start with the Great Kung Lao, time jump to present day.

Episode 3: Bi Han stealing Shinnok's amulet for Raiden

Episode 4: In response for Bi Han's involvement with Shinnok's amulet, Quan Chi has the Shirai Ryu exterminated and frames Bi Han, taking Hanzo Hasashi as his prize.

Episode 5: Black Dragon vs. Red Dragon crime war. SF takes a side and it turns out badly.

Episode 6: 700 years ago, Kenshi Takahashi made a decision that sealed his fate. 200 years ago, outlaw Erron Black makes his first deal with Outworld.

Episode 7: The entire episode is the movie, "Ninja Mime".

Episode 8 (Part 1 of 3): Shang Tsung pays the Lin Kuei to tip the balance of the tournament, two of their assassins disagree with the Grandmaster and his son on their vision of the future of their clan.

Episode 9 (Part 2 of 3): Haokah, the Matoka Indian god of Thunder, seeks the assistance of the current Nightwolf, Grey Cloud, to bring Earthrealm's champions to the next tournament.

Episode 10 (Part 3 of 3): As the tournament is set to begin, Raiden experiences shocking visions of a future he feels he has lived before.

What was pointless is how the 11th game ended, with the entire timeline and universe basically being reset.

Did they change the “get over here” line from the trailer?

They made it sound closer to the Ed Boon version, but it didn't really fit since those were the only words Hanzo spoke in English.

I agree, and yet that in game story was still better than this film. Which is annoying, and I get people are happy over the gore..but it was on the same level as every 2 minutes in the game. When making a film its Lore>>>Gore. Our star was boring..no one else deserved that spot?

The animated scorpion film was better.

Was like in nightmare on elm street 3 when they all discovered their dream powers too..25+ years of story and it was devolved down to that. Its actually quite impressive that they were so horribly bold.

Very disappointed they felt compelled to cast a wanna be Ken Wantanabe as Raiden.

Instead of centering the movie around the Human Punching-bag I would have rather seen Liu Kang’s origin story with Bo Rai Cho.

Also, I get that since this is the first movie they wanted to tackle the sub zero v. scorpion rivalry out of the gate. But it felt like that storyline should have been saved for the second movie, especially since there wasn’t even a freaking tournament for them to meet at.

As someone already said, if Scorpion is gonna be this involved you need Quan Chi. But since they had sub zero actually killing scorpion’s family, I guess you don’t. Maybe we’ll get him in the second movie to revive Sub-Zero as Noob Saibot and set the stage for a deadly alliance.

Eta- Kano was great

It was okay I guess. The writing was very choppy and the acting was wooden in spots. I'm glad I was able to watch it on HBO Max and not at some movie theater where I would have spent north of $30 on a ticket, popcorn, and a drink.

Exactly, just need another quarter (or maybe $1 with inflation)

Yeah that was my assumption. I actually didn’t like that they killed off so many at first. But then when that happened I figured it was no big deal and we’d see them again, especially for someone like Goro.

You guys do realize that there's a big difference between this fake gore video game killing rated R, and Deadpool language rated R right?

I will never forget this. Wife and I saw Deadpool on opening night on Valentine’s Day at Movie Tavern in Denham. Credits roll and about three mins into the opening scene right after he dives into the car this guy and two very young kids pass in front of us walking out. They never came back.

I mean holy hell, how do you take kids to see Deadpool and not realize what you’re getting into?

Tadanobu Asano is one of the best Japanese actors currently working. He's the only good actor they hired for this thing. Him sucking indicates a director problem. Every single performance sucking also points to a director problem.

Kano was the best character in the movie. I’ll go to Sonic over this.

Don't know if anyone else feels this way.

First 80 percent of the movie was trash. Terrible writing.

Last 20 percent felt like Mortal Kombat. Like a completely different director.

"kids" doesn't refer to 16 years olds.
the "kid" i refer to is a 10 year old, and he's not in school in the inner city, so no, he isn't hearing vulgar sex talk.

I wasn't looking for an answer to my question from a bunch of 20 year olds. I was looking and found my answer from dads that knew what i meant when i asked my question.

Raiden has never been passed off as an asian in the story.

Maybe the rice hat throws uninformed directors off.
