My question is was he offered these good roles previously?

yes

he just cashed in for about 4-5 years

now that his bank account is set, he has moved to smaller/indie roles and taken chances

He was good in A Time to Kill so I assume he would have gotten more high profile dramas. Reign of Fire was kind of stupid but at least he was branching out into action. There's no way to know what kind of movies he was offered but I have to assume he was offered all sorts of roles, he just chose rom coms for whatever reason.

Speakingif fallen actors, WTF happened to Josh Lucas?

Haven't heard or seen a peep out of him in a long time.

i'm looking at MM's filmography and this era really didn't exist. he was splitting rom coms with non-rom coms

if you want to know a movie that almost killed him, it was sahara. proved he could not be a lead in a blockbuster

once that's on your resume, this is what he can do:

1. rom coms
2. dramas in the south
3. comedy cameos
4. indies

Here's McConaughey doing one those awesome roundtables that The Hollywood Reporter does every year around awards season.

Start around the 7:30 mark. He talks about the turn he made in his career.

RDJ has done a great job rehabbing his image, but I feel like he's has gotten a little too comfortable with this Marvel cash cow. I really wish he would take more chances in his roles. I think he has a dramatic award-winning performance in him.

I agree, although I can't say I blame him. He was good in Due Date. I never saw the Sherlock movies. I still remember RDJ in Weird Science. He was such a douche.

Yeah, he did that at first, but he's now begun to transcend that. Starring in Interstellar is a pretty big deal, especially since Nolan is probably the most beloved director by the public working today.

RDJ will be forever known as Iron Man/Tony Stark. It's impossible to overcome that.

Just like this...

well nolan and MM are kind of similar. studio movie then their own movie. that was similar to MM during his rom com period

interstellar is the "nolan" movie after TDKR was the "studio" movie.

Name I havent heard in a while.

It was all downhill from "Stealth"

I thought he was great in Wonderland though.

ETA: Glory Road was actually solid...but then Poseidon happened. The less said the better.

Tom Hanks was in a worse situation than MCConaughy. He started to pay closer attention to the scripts that were offered to him and made the switch to serious actor.

Part of that was the movie itself. As a huge Cussler fan they did a terrible job casting the entire thing. I thought MM did his best with what was a crappy script version of the book as well.

Cole Hauser gave a Hardy/Bale esque performance (obviously before they were stars)

Such a wasted talent.

Nah. Even though Hanks was doing comedy early in his career, they were still great movies and ultimately acted as stepping stones towards his later work. Big, Hooch, and even the Burbs were awesome movies. The 80s made Tom Hanks.

Few of his early comedies were great movies. He had way more misses than hits. For every Big and Splash you had two or three bad movies. Once he hit A League of Their Own and Sleepless in Seattle he started his winning streak. Even he admits that he didn't know how to pick good roles prior to that.

MM is the Man. Great actor. Funny when he was a teen in Austin he would pretend to be Kidd Kraddick to get into clubs.

Fright Night was awesome, don't hate.

It fit in its own little campy niche.

Who knows? I'd love to see that nut, Nicolas Cage, get on a roll. He occasionally sneaks a good performance in (Lord of War), but it's been awhile since he's had any kind of consistency.
Cage is immensely popular worldwide and has a decent sized LOYAL U.S following.

His acting style gets a lot of crap nowadays, but it's basically a style he invented.

His debt problems have caused him to stay away from the dramas/comedies he did in the 80's and 90's for the big paydays, but he still delivers the goods
