On Claremont this is it. It's why it's hard to see the big changes the X family has gone through. Capturing that situation right is rare.

Thanks... I think.

I don't like "fan boy" culture, as they are just intolerant of criticism. Not everything is perfect, y'all. I like when new writers come in and change things up. I do think a slavish devotion to continuity creates a boring universe.

But I do genuinely comics and want people to enjoy them, too. I'm an evangelist for the medium.

Infinity Gauntlet sets the bar pretty damned high. For more multi-team fun you should check out the first Secret Wars (first appearance of the Venom symbiote, anyone?).

As others have said, the Claremont years on Uncanny XMen are not to be missed as well as the Civil War series.

Some that may have been missed are:

Avengers: The Korvac Saga
Avengers: 160-210(ish) (I think this also covers the Korvac Saga)
The Incredible Hulk: Peter David's 12-year run was pretty definitive for that character

And finally, it's not canon but certainly is fun:

The original Secret Wars is one of the single most despised comics in the entire history of Marvel. I cannot, in good conscience, recommend it to another human being to read on purpose, unless he (and it has to be a he) is 11 years old.

Secret Wars was Marvel's first big cross-over event and was popular enough to generate a sequel event (which did sucked mightily) and pushed Marvel into creating more large cross-over events over the following years. The series not only introduced the Venom sympiote (which has had enormous impact in the Spider titles over the decades) and Titania (meh) but also had Doom in one his most shining moments. It's by no means a Fall of the Mutants, but to call it "one of the single most despised comics in the entire history of Marvel" is complete bullshite.

One of IGN's picks for best comic book events

BamSmackPow's #4 in their list of Top Marvel Events

Hell, even the thread at Comicvine doesn't seem to have anyone else who dogs it anywhere even close to what you've said

If you didn't like it, that's fine. But to toss your own conjecture out there like it's carved in stone among the rest of the readers is ridiculous.

Not exactly what you were requesting, but this seems like a good place to say that the Brian Michael Bendis Daredevil run was awesome.

The Marvel staff had a virtual mutiny against Jim Shooter over Secret Wars. It was what began the end of his tenure as editor in chief. The recent book on the history of Marvel comics had a huge section on Secret Wars: it was a massively despised comic, so much so that Shooter had to do a lot of the work on it himself because several writers and artists refused to help out.

It was designed to sell toys to kids, and it was called Secret Wars because market research showed that kids bought toys that had the word "secret" or "war" on the packaging, so they used both. I'm not kidding.

Secret Wars II, of course, was even worse, but the original was widely derided at the time. It was reviled by the comic world at the time.

It is to Tom DeFalco's credit that he took the idea of Spider-Man getting black duds and turned it into a sentient character in the Spider-Man comic. DeFalco would, eventually, take over as editor-in-chief from Shooter.

Secret Wars made a lot of money because it was marketed specifically to children to sell them toys. It's not a high point in Marvel storytelling, and it alienated a lot of the talent (it's one of the issues that cause Byrne to quit and go to DC)

I wouldn't mind reading that.

How much of the ire was at Shooter for capitulating to a toy-maker on storyline matters and how much was from the various writers who already didn't like sharing characters being forced to hand over their title namesakes?

The bottom line on all of this is that it's a fun, easy read, especially for someone just jumping into comics. Would you rather someone new to the genre read something more convoluted? Like the Clone Saga?

I know I already answered you, but I hope they turn that in to symbiote and show the first signs of Spider-Man in the MCU.

So with the new Secret Wars they're letting the Studio drive creative instead of a toy company.

Purposely not looking for spoilers. I was a bit surprised with the suddenness of the event (especially after getting distracted by the setting up of the dinner date) and look forward to being surprised in the Fall.

With the Inhumans saga, I thought we would end up getting a Black Bolt, Medusa, etc and was looking forward to Cal being Maximus the Mad (he really looked the part).

I wasn't sure you were actually serious,, don't think I like that, nope, don't like that at all.

I need an all cuddly and sweet Jemma!

incidentally how the hell did that sludge get out of it's container? also if it's "kree" then why is it dangerous to the inhumans?

Yes. From what I understand it's supposed to be a reboot of the Marvel Universe (by combining all of their various other Marvel realities).

Fitz messed with something when he was trying to ask her out and it left door slightly open.

i will say you could just dive into civil war if you have watched the movies and read any avenger arc in the last 15 years. Unless you read a lot of back story stuff some of the stuff in civil war is going to leave you scratching your head. You will know the main characrters, and who they are outside of reed richards (unless you have read FF). But the only thing you need to know is reed richards is a dick

Winter solider is worth reading though, certainly better than civil war. IMHO might be one of the best marvel arcs ever, but I really like ed brubaker.

eta: You will kill yourself if you try to read all the civil war stuff. There is just too much stuff in there. I would just focus on the main civil war arc, and the cap america run, xmen, and the FF. The road to civil war is worth reading too.

While I agree, one of my very favorite panels is from the early pages of Secret Wars - Ultron (being Ultron) flies up to Galactus who is just trying to figure out WTF just happened, and attempts a pre-emptive strike. Galactus just drains him of all energy and Ultron collapses to the ground in a heap. Like Mike Tyson - Michael Spinks.

ETA: Found it.
