Marvel Fans Showing Franchise Fatigue While DC Fans Prefer Single Superhero Over Universe

Over one-third of Marvel fans feel fatigued from the constant stream of content served in theaters and on Disney+ this year, according to a new study released on Thursday by the fan platform Fandom. But the study also shows that Marvel fans are also far more inclined to watch any Marvel project in comparison to DC fans, who in turn are more likely to consume film and TV about a specific superhero rather than the entire DC catalogue.
Those are a few of the extensive findings in the study, which drew from a survey of 5,000 entertainment and gaming fans between 13 and 54 years old, as well as what Fandom terms “proprietary insights” from its platform of over 300 million monthly users across 250,000 different wikis.
According to Fandom’s study, 81% of Marvel fans would watch anything released in the franchise, while 67% of DC fans would do the same. Conversely, just 38% of Marvel fans say they’re focused on specific superheroes rather than the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, compared to 57% of DC fans who care more about one or two superheroes rather than the full DC Universe. That could a major factor in why only 20% of DC fans say they’re fatigued by the number of releases in a year, versus 36% of Marvel fans who feel that way. Through September, Fandom reports that “The Batman” was the global site’s “largest cinematic release.” DC fans are also more 20% more likely than Marvel fans to buy products — collectables, clothes, even superhero-inspired menu items.

There would be no fatigue if quality hadn't dropped. Marvel fans just know that only like one out of every four projects is going to be worth anything.

it also feels like Endgame was such a perfect way to end it.
Hard to really care about anything since even though I definitely enjoyed a few of the movies and TV shows since.

Yeah, Marvel is trying to re-wrap the Christmas present in order to un-wrap it again with the same level of enthusiasm as the first time. It just won’t work. I wouldn’t say Endgame “stuck the landing,” but it was solid end of the franchise. Everything after…including RDJ’s inevitable return…will be lame no matter what they do.

Wakanda Forever just had best November opening on record….. fatigue?

Wakanda Forever’s early tracking was for a $225,000,000 opening weekend. It opened at $182,000,000.. obviously a really good opening, but not what Disney had hoped considering the massive production budget on this thing. It’s Monday-Friday numbers are tracking below Thor: Love and Thunder as well

Thor Love and Thunder had the be the worst of the bunch. Is it? Or do I just hate it that much.

MCU needed to stop after Endgame. It was never going to be something people would continue to focus on, especially since so many of these movies end up streaming less than 2 months after release.

Actually - they prefer good, entertaining stories over woke bullshite written, starring, and directed by Leftards.

As much as I loved Ragnarok, I hated that steaming pile. It was just a terrible terrible movie.

lol...everyone knows that you cannot use Black Panther movies to serve as an indicator for any trends related to the MCU.

Because the DC catalogue outside of stand-alones like Joker and The Batman are dogshit. Black Adam made less than pandemic Black Widow and Wakanda Forever almost matched Adam total gross in one weekend

I will admit that I have Marvel fatigue. The quality has dipped somewhat and I don't find myself excited for any of them quite like I was.
I enjoyed Shang Chi and Doctor Strange 2 and Wandavision. Other than those, the rest have felt like homework. Still haven't seen Eternals or Love and Thunder or Wakanda Forever.
Moon Knight had lots of cool stuff going on, but was too unfocused. Falcon and Winter Soldier was the same way. Haven't finished Ms. Marvel and I haven't tried She-Hulk. I just can't build up the enthusiasm.
I can't say that DC is any better, but I really liked The Batman. Black Adam did not look interesting at all (but that is more because of The Rock than anything).

Werewolf by Night was better than any non-Spider-Man Dis/Marvel product since Endgame. And they low-keyed the promotion on that.

Disagree, to an extent. What would have been an amazing storyline is what happened after Infinity War. Change who gets "Snapped." Kill off BP, IronMan, Cap. What does the world look like, and how do you move forward when the Big Bad actually wins? There's a lot of interesting story and arcs that were tried to be covered in the first half-hour of Endgame, just so Good Guys Could Win.
If Feige and Co had embraced the Snap as the event it was supposed to be, you could have had Phase 4 be the "how do we actually defeat this guy, with half the world gone."
Marvel removed all the stakes of the world it had built through 3 phases, just to have it all undone with a McGuffin in Endgame. I checked out after that, because the content did, too.

This is the answer.
Up through WandaVision, the focus was on quality story. We had solid characters built and fleshed out before our eyes, they were put into tough situations against interesting and complex foes/issues and they succeeded despite the odds.
A lot of post-WandaVision has been in positioning new characters whose core is little more than that they tick a victimization box. These characters are flat because the writers have substituted a struggle against (or making a statement about) race/gender narratives for personality development. The inclusion of Riri Williams and America Chavez (whose portrayal in the comics are exactly that) into the MCU is emblematic of the problem when there are so many other GOOD characters and stories out there left to tell.

Yes. A whole phase of the snapped universe before Endgame would have had huge potential.
