I quickly second guessed my call of John 10 mins
I thought something was off during the initial interrogation of John when he was describing how he shot her.
When frank said John was telling stories during the car ride, that confirmed he wasn’t the killer.
I thought it was Lori that was the killer, until mr Carroll mentioned the gun- wouldn’t have made sense for Lori to be rummaging thru his yard, must have been a kid.

John and Lori's son killed Erin.
John is the baby's father. The son killed Erin because he was pissed that she was ruining his parent's marriage.
The son kills Erin and he calls his Uncle Billy to dispose the body.
Billy tells John what he son did. John tells his son that he knows what he did and that it will just be their secret (the bedroom scene that Lori saw and assumed it was about another affair).
When John and Billy's Dad tells John that he saw Billy covered in blood, John realized this was their out.
He convinces Billy to take the fall for his son and he tells Lori that they are going to pin everything on Billy after explaining what really happened. He also tells Lori that he is going to kill Billy at the cabin and make it look like a suicide. Lori goes along with the plan.
The only thing that I can't figure out is how Dylan fits into all of this...

Fantastic season. Winslet was incredible and the show was gripping.

Meh...did not like making Ryan the killer. Pretty lame, IMO. Also, Dylan was doing far too much for a kid that isn't his.

Dylan was a completely different character this episode. And the explanation Jess gave didn’t make much sense.

Would have been a bit more realistic if Lori was the killer.

I liked the finale but I agree the wife would have been more believable

Jess and Dylan burning the diaries made sense because in previous episodes we were told the following:
a. Erin said that Dylan was the father because his parents were great people, and DJ being part of that family would have given him the best possible upbringing.
b. Dylan’s parents wanted to keep DJ even after the paternity test.

Im here to say good job on the ones who got it right. Didn't expect it to go down quite like it did.

Cudos to you sir! I was hell bent that it wasn't Ryan!
But with that said, IMO they made it Ryan just to have a huge plot twist at the end. They destroyed the Ross family For what? To basically punish Lore by having her stuck by herself raising her and Johns special needs Daughter, his love child, and haveing to deal with her son being incarcerated. Did she really deserve all that? Then just glossing over the fact, that she herself should have been in jail for lying and obstructing the investigation. Almost ruined the whole series with for me.
In the end it felt like the show runner secretly had it in for Lore lol! Us finding out who was on the picture would have been enough of a twist for 99% of us. John being the killer made the most sense to me. Destroying his whole
Family because He couldn't keep it in his pants, was overkill!

Never mind, it has been explained upthread.

I thought the ending was good, but I think the second to last episode was the real heart of the show. Everything in the final episode could have been disclosed in the 6th episode for maximum twist and closure. But I get why they stretched it so they could focus on a few different things and take their time with it. All in all HBO redeemed themselves for making me watch and anticipate the Outsider last year.

Dylan’s parents are so great, yet they produced and raised Dylan, who is a complete piece of shite.
Great series, with all sorts of gems along the way.
But the Dylan character was the weakest and most inconsistent part. He wouldn’t pay for surgery when he thought the kid was his, but he insisted on spending time with the kid. Then he immediately wants the kid taken away from him once he finds out he is not the father. But he destroys evidence and puts a gun in his friend Jess’s face all as part of an effort to make sure his parents get to keep the kid and raise it. Then he brings Lori money for the kid. This dude is all over the place.

Why do people still ask about show an not put the network they watch them on, or spell the name right?

Great series. Kate was awesome... Couple things that bothered me.
1. The gun was only gone for a few hours but the old man noticed...
2. The kid told his mom it was the same woman.. the lie didn't fit well in my opinion.
3. Nobody noticed this kid was gone for a few hours.
It felt like they got to the last episode and said, let's make someone else the killer, but other than that I liked it. Does anyone know if they'll have a new season, new case?

Yeah this was my only problem with the ending. Dylan was a complete piece of shite the entire show, but then its revealed he was doing all of this because he cared about the kid so much? I get writing in red herrings for entertainment, but the reveal otherwise needs to at least make some sense.
It would have made more sense for John to have paid Dylan to burn the journals.
