So..... I've seen episode 1. Have episodes 3-5 on DVR....
I so want to watch but I guess I should wait and catch episode 2. Based on this thread I assume episode 2 advances the plot fairly well. (I stopped reading the thread when it looked like spoilers were about to drop).

Agreed, I think he’s just there to bring out more of Mare’s past for the viewer as he doesn’t know her or her history, so he asks a lot of questions and makes Mare think about things she’s buried.
Dylan is where I’m really confused at the moment

Second, Mare would NOT have gone to the river alone knowing she was going to apprehend a murderer. Not to mention disobeying the Chief right after she gets back on the case and seems to be thinking more rationally.

Have you watched all the series? Mare is pretty stupid and screwed in the head.
Growing up with these guys and being friends with them, she probably thinks she can defuse the situation with no harm coming her way.

Police guns in the 80's and earlier were Colt revolvers. Now days they are Glock's or Beretta's. Dylan's gun and John's gun were not revolvers
Interesting point. In the sneak peak for next week it shows the opening of a ceremonial type box with a revolver in it, IIRC. Such as possibly a retired service weapon that a retired cop would keep as it was given to him upon his retirement in a box like that.
As for Dylan, the way he told the blonde haired girl (Erin's friend/ Jess I think) something like "you're gonna get your face blowed off like Erin" seemed odd to me. Probably nothing but the manner in which he said it sort of made me wonder if he was saying it as he had seen it, but likely just over analyzing.
I need to rewatch as I'm sure I have missed alot of subtle stuff but did they ever mention anything about the ballistics or any of that for Erin's death? Dylan was holding the gun left handed. Can't they typically make estimated guesses from trajectories on what hand the shooter shot with when its close range.

I'm thinking he may have been the influence for the son. Like he told the son what was going on, he drove him out there, etc.
The only hole in that theory is that he did act surprise when they revealed the kid wasn't his, but I guess he could have still thought the kid was his, even if he knew about the affair.

I think we seen enough of Dylan to know he would have told everyone if that happen, especially his trashy girlfriend. I also don't think Erin would have told him she slept with John/Bill.

I don't know why else he would be burning the journals without knowing (although we could obviously be given an unknown reason next week)

He could have just discovered her journals without her knowing

Almost looked like someone hired him to do it. Dylan seems to be a sociopath. I don't know of anything in those journals that would bother him (unless he is running that sex for hire website).

That screamed Red Herring to me.

No, anyone who says they can do that is full of shite. In fairness, we've found out that a lot of "expert witnesses" used by prosecutors are indeed completely full of shite.

If I’m not mistaken, the gun they showed in next week’s clip is different than the one they showed Dylan holding and the one they showed in the Ross’ tackle box. If that is indeed the murder weapon then the Siobhan theory could fit. It’s just odd that we see a confession from Billy and a scene with blood on him, plus we have the evidence that Dylan wasn’t home that night as witnessed by his girlfriend and the statement with him threatening Jess ending up like Erin. There’s too much information that one of those two groups is involved in the killing.
I think the killer is more likely to come from the John, Billy, Ryan group than it is Siobhan or Dylan. If Dylan’s not the killer why destroy the diaries? I don’t think it was to hide who the true father was because up until he got shot and was in the hospital, he thought he was the father. Plus, he never looked through the diaries. I still believe he and Jess and Erin were part of a prostitution ring and he doesn’t want that to get out. But where did he go the night of the murder?

I think someone in the Ross family took Mare's dads pistol and killed Erin. I just don't see Siobhan being the killer - it's too out there.

Siobhan had certainly not acted guilty, being preoccupied with so many other things. She hasn’t really thought twice about Erin’s murder after the discussion with her mother the night after the murder. Then again, Mare’s revelations to the therapist and the question of whether mental illness is hereditary may come into play and she just blocked it out. Still too much smoke with the Ross brothers though.

Another small clue is Lori saying she could tell the first time John was cheating but not this time. Makes me think he wasn’t cheating and the secret is that Ryan is the killer. Billy is taking the fall for it but idk why.

Something I just thought of is the cousin Deacon could also be the killer. He had access to the pistol.

It definitely could be Ryan. If the murder weapon is the one in the tackle box, who put it there? Billy seemed surprised to see it when he opens it. He assumes John put it there to kill him. If John intended to do that, why did he let Billy grab it and take it? Maybe Ryan stashed it there and neither knew about it before the fishing trip.

well if he helped Ryan dump the body, he is already an accomplice, so why not just take the full sentence and protect the kid?
its what I would tell him

Hmmm. I like this.
I could definitely see John hiring Dylan to get the rest of the journals.
Posted on 5/24/21 at 1:52 pm to Rjlebla
I don't see any chance of it being the kid. Why would a middle school kid be out at like 2am?
Posted on 5/24/21 at 1:52 pm to Salmon
I can’t figure out how Ryan got there though. Was John meeting up with her and he followed somehow? Maybe he was going to shoot his dad and killed her by accident. Billy came to help clean up. Hence his anger. Idk who the dad is between them two but it has to be one of them. I still don’t rule out Lori completely. Dylan just baffles me. He’s not smart enough to pull this off but he’s a sociopath only worried about himself. So anything could have been in those journals for him to burn.
