I thought it was good -- not great. I walked out liking the original one better.

Have you seen it yet?

I thought it was great! I think people who don't like it go in expecting another Christopher Reeves movie and don't realize they're watching a Zack Snyder film.

And I stopped putting any stock into Rotten Tomatoes after I saw they gave Boondock Saints 20%.

I used to think Boondock Saints was the shite. Watched it with my dad who was a little more critical, which made me a little more critical, and realized it wasn't that good.

They gave Kingdom of the Crystal Skull a 78%. Their opinions are invalid.

It's Nolan's lowest rated movie (that he's involved with) on RT now

I really don't think it matters, Superman is a character that just really doesn't translate to screen well this day in age.

I have been waiting for this film to hit for several years and have let my hype rise to "best heroic movie ever" levels. When the mediocre critic reviews began to filter in, I and many others felt a lot of disappointment. I entered my viewing with lowered expectations and left kind of confused with many of the negative accounts. I think many, including myself, entered this updated mythos with our own personal best Superman/Clark Kent preference. I'm personally invested in 10 years of Smallville, so Tom Welling is my "ideal" characterization (many use Reeve as the standard). The initial buildup to his taking the Superman mantle, seemed a little "unearned" as it took Welling ten years to don the tights. I would have preferred more inspection of his moral code development. Once the action took off, I was able to shake my prejudices and enjoy the roller coaster ride.

some of the negatives include:
- Superman's seemingly lack of regard for the safety of human bystanders (collateral damage)during the skyscraper leveling endgame.
- Lack of warmth and hope as compared to the previous movies/episodes. I never got that standup up and cheer feeling due to the human death toll and Clark's final Zod encounter/decision.
- There was actually a little too much action which took some emotional weight from the 45 minutes of final battle scenes.
- somewhat rushed love story
- lack of "Metropolis Clark"

positives:
- good portrayal of the adoptive and biological parents.
- I like the organic Krypton over the Donner ice planet.
- fighting scenes that were lightning fast and well choreographed.
- the heavy use of sci-fi elements.
- faora
- nice sequel jumping off point from the ending.
- young clark smallville flashbacks.
-Jor-El's story integration

With a little more character development, heart, and positive atmosphere, the sequel could be the film the character truly deserves. Definitely a must see film for the technical achievements alone.

Audience with an 82% which has always been more telling to me on the off chance that i'm judging whether i'm going to go see a movie based on reviews.

I think Nolan is the reason the story was so choppy in the beginning. Trying to cram TOO much in as fast as possible to get to the action. He was the producer and wrote the story. He should have caught the editing issues early but simply disregarded or missed them.

Here is a cracked article that pretty much sums it up.

Personably I find it difficult to put Superman on screen as difficult it is to give a billionaire problems in a film.

From that Cracked article:

quote:

Nearly every writer who has ever tackled a Superman story arc has tried to test the limits of his powers by pitting him against an alien being who's even stronger and more super, but they are completely ignoring the potential all around them for an engaging narrative about Superman struggling and failing to help everyone all at once from broad, systemic issues.

Totally Agree. Every Superman movie misses the boat here.

So, there isn't really a problem with "translating to screen" (which I hate the sound of more and more every time I hear it). I think it's quite easy to put him on screen. Just as easy as it is to put Batman, Avengers, Batman again, Spiderman, etc. It's a comic book character (and a very successful one at that) being put on a movie screen. How does it not translate?

And billionaires do have problems....just not our problems.

Batman = human; can die easily
Avengers = team building issues; plenty of humans that can die easily
Spiderman = human; can die easily

I think the point is that Superman is so fricking powerful that no one is ever going to whip his arse.
