Probable reason Betty wasn't in this one ... (I don't consider this a spoiler at all cause I have no idea of what will happen or who will be around the rest of the season ... but here's some spoiler space to hopefully avoid the recriminations flying around in the Walking Dead threads)

I think January Jones may have been pregnant IRL which may explain here absence here. Doesn't mean she will or won't be around the rest of the season of course or even if that's why she wasn't in this one. But I remember reading something about her pregnancy.

betty isn't going to be in this season very much because of January Jones' pregnancy. They squeeze her in a few episodes, but she won't be a huge part of the storyline judging by what I've read.
Solid episode. Harry was money.
I'm looking forward to meagan and Peggy's dynamic. It's going to cause some problems that Pegs "gets" Don on a level that Meagan just isn't going to get. Peggy knew Don was going to hate the party, and tried to warn this dumb broad.
Loved Pete as well tonight. He still has absolutely no tact though. Won't be long before he's not taking the train back out to the burbs I think. He clearly just loves the city.

Great episode. Subtle, slow moving, and, like a good chess player, Weiner has set up a lot of great moves for the rest of the season.
A few thoughts and predictions:
1. Don is whipped and Megan's a slut. Don's going to be hurt for the first time in his life, and there will be hell to pay.
2. Lane has some psychological issues that may come back up in the same way that the episode with his father did in the previous season. Also, they never really touched on why he -- and he alone -- seemed to have financial issues.
3. Sally will have more problems during this season, as seen from the very first scene where she tried to get a look at Megan in bed. Also, wtf is up with the new Bobby? This new kid sucks.
4. Peggy and Pete are turning out to be the most deep characters, in that they appear to be the only normal ones, but there is a lot of other stuff going on that they seem to be hiding. I also wonder if they will ever have to confront the bastard child together.
ETA: Sorry for any typos or rambling. I watched this episode how it was supposed to be watched... With several well-made Old Fashions and a nice cigar.

I find it fascinating to watch the dynamic between Roger and Pete. Kind of like an old silverback sparring with a young rival feeling his oats and becomming more powerful. Or maybe an old male lion being challenged by a younger rival.
Of course I think they are really fighting for beta status right now. Because both seem to acknowledge that Don is still alpha (as long as he doesn't allow himself to get too distracted for too long).
I'd like to see Roger get some good shots in, probably because I'm an old guy myself. But I think he realizes Pete's worth to the firm. On the other hand, I don't think Pete puts much emphasis on Roger's boozing contributions at all.

Did they use to actually work harder (Roger excluded, he's always been a bum at work) or has it been that long since the show has been on? I was almost rooting against them at some points because of how fricking pathetic these partners are.

We may be reading too much into Lane's "money problems." He's a notorious tightass. That might be the reason he doesn't want to prepay his kid's tuition. And he didn't take any money from the wallet.
And the way Megan freaked out cleaning house seems a little schitzophrenic.

I dunno. That would have been mighty hevy handed just to show him being a tight wad.
If I had to guess something will come from it.
Does he still have the playboy bunny girl friend? Maybe he's putting out $$ keeping her or another mistress set up in a nice place or something. Or maybe he never recovered from the big money each of the partners had to put up to keep the firm afloat awhile back.
It's gotta be pointing to something.

Bobby is now the little kid in once upon a time, hence the new actor playing him. FYI - he said in an interview that january jones was a bit crazy.
Wasn't Lanes wife in England at the end of last season? Wonder why/how they got back together?? He is definitely having money trouble - and with his black bunny past I winder about this new equal opportunity secretary??
Pete vs Roger should be interesting. Roger had some great lines last night(when doesn't he?)
They are setting Don up for something. I like the happier guy thing a bit but it can't last too long or will get boring. No doubt Meagan will be rife with issues and insecurities. Hell she screwed up his birthday and then took it out on him. Don as always knew just what to do - but it's interesting he only acted that way for her on the episode. No client magic and no real office magic.

Lane's father slapped him around (literally) in season 4 and forced him to get back together with his wife. I would assume that Lane's bunny gf is no longer in the picture.

Sad there was no Betty. I really miss the tension dynamic between Don and Betty's interactions.
Did Pete lose a lot of hair and gain a good bit of weight or was that just me?
Is Meghan going to get her teeth fixed? Are those the actresses' real teeth? It seems amazing that such a pretty girl in 2012 would have teeth that bad. Maybe they're just props for the show.

That part was awesome.
I liked all the subtle jabs they were taking at each other. Especially the practical joke exchange at the end with Roger and Pete.

Forgot all about Lanes Dad - but weren't the problems that the wife wanted to be in England regardless? I must just not remember something.

Didn't really notice that he lost any hair, but did notice he gained quite a bit of weight.
I foresee Pete to start cheating again. He seems to be upset that his wife is no longer trying to look pretty for him and he doesn't like living in the suburbs.

Yeah, they never really explain how he got her to come back, but I believe season 4 ended with him over in England. I'm assuming he talked her into it. Don't really need to know how he convinced her to come back.
I'd like to know how much his money problems progress and why he has said problems as the season goes on.

great first episode back. a few quick observations:
** The primary theme I gathered was one of complacency. Both Don and Roger seemed to come off as particularly comfortable in their current positions in both their personal life and at the company - almost lazy and/or devoid of motivation and ambition. I surmise that this is a story arc that will come to a head some time in mid-season leaving the second half with a different overall feel where they, yet again, attempt to rectify the emptiness. The reasons for this: ROGER is unhappy with his marriage but sees no "solution" because the only solution he knew (marry a much younger, beautiful and "innocent" woman) hasn't worked out. DON is at one of those points in his life where he thinks he finally figured out what makes him content; but, of course, as we all know Mr. Draper is inherently flawed when it comes to his ability to live within himself and any parameters he sets or are set for him.
** Peter Campbell continues to grow as a character. His development from season 1 is astounding, especially considering what a fantastic job the writers have done of initially setting his character up and putting him through an array of challenges, both trivial and large in scope. I suspect Pete will once again want to leave the company at some point.
** We will say goodbye to Bert some time this season, IMO. The foreshadowing of his exit - his line about the meeting, after it had already taken place in the hallway - was a bit obvious.
** I'm not sure of the exact details of what happened with Don and Megan between the end of season 4 and the beginning of this one, but I can tell you Don was still in his honeymoon stage and loving every second of his new lease on life.. and Megan was still starry-eyed and naive that she might just be the one to "lock down" Don Draper. Megan got a cold dose of the reality of Don's insecurities and domineering personality when he let her have a big spoonful of his arrogant, childish attitude after the surprise party he didn't enjoy. The sex scene between them gave us a glimpse of what life is like at home - a bit subversive and superficial. These two don't know each other on a deeper level, that's quite clear. The audience's perception mirrors that of Don - i.e. he/we see her as a sex symbol .. someone to be conquered.
Looking forward to the rest of this season. Interested to see where Betty and Henry are in their relationship, as well as with her kids.. but I suspect we will not get a heavy dose of that story line. Also, can we please bring back muthafrickin' Paul Kinsey?

nice first episode. god, i love this show.
i'm very intruiged by several storylines within the show:
- Megan/Don - Betty Draper Jr. Which saddens me. Megan really does it for me and seemed so perfect for Don last season; But I don't think Don can be effective at work with life being perfect. Much like House in House. She if fiya, i'll say that much. That lil scene at the apartment turned me the hell on with her in the lingerie and Don taking what Don wanted.
That actress has lost some serioius wait the last few years. There are also some nudes online fwiw. very nice.
- Pete/Roger - Roger better get his shite together or Pete will be escorting him out the doors soon enough. The power play is intresting and the two actors are perfect pitted against one another.
- Joan/Roger/Military Doctor Husband - Got a feeling he dies, Joan gets desperate due to losing her position in the office and starts using baby/hotness to leverage herself with Roger.
- Lane - how the hell is he broke being such a penny pincher? Should be interesting to see where that goes.

3) The atmosphere jumped forward WAY more than 9 months. Don's apartment, smoking dope, 60's clothes. Not saying it's a bad thing.
From the producers to the director to the writers to the actors to the costume and set designers... the entire crew did a fantastic job of giving the new season a very 60s feel. I think we'll get a heavy dose of civil rights, Vietnam, women's lib, etc. this season.

My prediction is that when Joan comes back they find out SCDP is broke.
Lane even said to Joan he's a fraud. I don't think he was just trying to make her feel good. Joan ran the office before and with out her and the lack of business it's gone to hell. Them showing Lane has personal financial troubles shows that Lane can't even handle his own money much less the company's.
