I don't think we are going to hear from Midge again. We already spent one episode checking in on her, and I feel like that was enough. She was a total mess.

I think the waitress stuff isn't near as complicated as it came across. To me it's as simple as her reminding Don of his "type" of woman. She's a mix between Rachel, Midge, Suzanne, and some of the hookers in his youth. The sad thing is he's been with so many meaningless women he honestly can't tell if he knows her at first.

This episode was one of the most depressing of the series IMO. Hardly any laughs and really shined the light on the misery of all these characters. Even Ken who holds the distinction of being the only moral human on the show. He sadly gets caught up in the mess with all these people and instead of retiring and writing, he goes to work for Dow Chemical of all places just so he can screw SC&P.

I hoped this wouldn't happen but now I fear it more than ever. Weiner is rolling with the overall theme on change The Sopranos had. People attempt it, but it's never real. Don has tried to change so many times, but at the end of the day he is who he is and he will never be happy. I seriously hope I'm wrong but the premiere certainly didn't point towards that. I do think this episode will be clarified as the next few episodes air and we can see where we are headed.

The girl in the opening scene is Rainey Qualley, daughter of Andie MacDowell (Groundhog Day).

She was a symbolic character.

I kind of got that as she did look familiar but I couldn't place her either. It was just the:
quote:

And most telling, she was a prostitute

That's what I thought as she felt she "owed" to sleep with Don since they left $100. But then she was turning him away and what trick does that?
quote:

Don saw this in her the moment he laid eyes on her.

He definitely saw every woman you mentioned and the easiness of her is what he's used to.
quote:

Many fans of the show assumed Rachel would come back at some point in the plot to be Don's girl when he turns good.

I guess for some reason I forgot that her storyline was anything too big. I have only watched each ep 1 time though since I started watching when the show started so that's an easy reason to forget shite It will be nice to do a re-watch however. Thanks for the recap

I think Roger's always been an arse and a shitty father and a selfish prick, but he's that selfish prick you love because he's funny, witty, rich, and bangs OT 10s.

Exactly, and in the beginning of the episode he was true to form. But firing Ted seemed weird for Roger to be a part of.
quote:

What was most sad for me in this episode was Ken. Ken had a way out.

quote:

He was sucked into the work world, just like Don, just like Pete, and he wanted to keep playing the game.

Interesting as a few people have said that in this thread. I loved that he came back and gave it right back to Roger. Yes, his wife is a cutey and she's got money so he doesn't "have" to work. But at his age and in that industry, I don't blame him one bit. I'm not sad for him although I think Weiner will probably make the payoff that I should have.

If you've seen The Wire, it's just like the drug "game" in that show. You can't leave the game. Never can leave the game.

Indeed.

Oh good god, no wonder I'm in love, I used to have it for Andie as well

Thanks to Mac, I looked at her Instagram and not only is she gorgeous but I guess she's a singer too and has a pic with Willie Nelson, so I guess country. I would put up with that shitty music for her

I'm sure tons of people already knew this, but I can't believe I'm just realizing that the girl who spilled the wine is the flight attendant that was telling Don she hated Mehgan for being his wife when he was flying out to California.

Yeah, she's a TWA flight attendant.

It now makes sense, because Ted opened the door originally for Don, and Pete closed it. Now it makes sense.

Do we know what year is it now? Last season ended in 1969 with the moon landing.

Btw Don didn't see her ghost, he just dreamed about her. It was a premonition more that a ghost

The whole scene with Rachel and Pete didn't actually happen. The next scene after that was him waking up next to the flight attendant. They just made it seem like that was real, but it was a dream

I am frankly shocked that for the midseason break we jumped that far into the future. I had always expected the series to end just into the 70s or right on the cusp. Surprised Weiner didn't want a NYE '70 episode.

Moon landing was summer 69. So they skipped like 9 months ahead. I wonder if Weiner always wanted to skip ahead because he was very against the break. I hope the break didn't cause him to change his ending.

Anyone else sick of how hard the show tries to make Peggy seem attractive? Elizabeth Moss is not even average let alone some bomb shell that guys drool over.

I don't see that at all, her dating history is mostly made up of dudes that have just as much baggage as her or are in it just for the free movie theater hand job

They've been much more realistic with her dating life than any other show ever would be

I've been trying to figure out the underlying theme of Peggy being so highly sought after by guys who typically wouldn't be itching to take Peggy on a date.

My best guess is that she's perceived more attractive because she's one of the few women who have actually made significant strides in the corporate world at the time. that's about all I got. otherwise, I find myself asking the same thing every date she goes on

I think they made her unattractive on purpose. He can get any girl he wants (which the episode also showed). He didn't want this girl because she was hot. It wasn't about that at all.
