LOTR Christmas rewatch check in thread

I can’t believe, that on the 19th, it’ll be 20 years since The Fellowship of the Ring hit theaters.
I was 11 years old, I had read the Hobbit in school that fall and I still remember it like yesterday my mom taking me and my older brother to theaters to see it. I knew LOTR was the sequel to the Hobbit but not much else beyond that.
I remember the fear put into my little mind at first sight of the Orcs in the prologue, the constant fear butterflies in my stomach as the Nazgûl were hunting the hobbits, my idolization of Aragorn and Legolas growing with each scene, my jaw dropping during the Balin’s Tomb skirmish, the despair when Gandalf dropped into the darkness of Kazad-Dum, being on the edge of my seat during the battle of Amon Hen, my confusion when it ended, not having read the books yet
It literally changed me forever. The next day I got mom to take me to Books-a-Million and I picked up the trilogy and read them all in January. Between releases I absolutely wore out my dvd copies over and over, I couldn’t get enough. My friends and I recited lines over and over in class.
It’s the best trilogy ever made. I watch them every Christmas because of the nostalgia it brings that they came out at this time. I always look back at how cool my mom was for taking us to such a high-fantasy set of films. She ended up going with us to each subsequent release opening day in theaters. That’s a memory I’ll never forget.
Can’t wait for my 1 year old to come of age in about 10 years and we watch them together and I annoy the hell out of him telling him about Viggo breaking his toe kicking that helmet and what not. I fricking love these films. I’ll knock out The Two Towers this weekend.

I'm doing this now too. I saw HBO Max now has the extended editions of Fellowship and of Two Towers. Just finished Fellowship EE yesterday and started TT EE today. I'm watching them an hour or two in a sitting taking breaks from work.

I do the same thing. I didn’t know this was a thing. I started a few years ago and my son, now 8, digs it. I love going down memory lane with these movies.

LOTR is instant nostalgia to my junior high years
Rented Fellowship DVD and had no idea it was a trilogy.. but quite bummed there at the end
Saw Twin towers at my local theater
Saw Return of the King in NYC in Times Square on a Sunday. I remember vividly the theater seated 2,000 people and the ticket was $14 in 2003

I don't know why, but LOTR is just far better watched during the holiday season.
Perhaps it's because of the strong religious undertones in Tolkien's works, but it just fits.
BTW, the Fellowship of the Ring Extended version is probably the best as semblance of fantasy work ever put in film.
And I used to be a Two Towers guy, but Fellowship, to me, is now the far superior film.

Peter Jackson looks like he would be right at home in the Shire. Perhaps a Proudfoot or a Bracegirdle from Hardbottle.

Walking out of the theater, my mom (who had read the books) told me that it was the first of three movies. I was so pumped to learn that there was so much more to come. The whole trilogy was an amazing experience.

The extended edition of The Two Towers is a vast improvement over the theatrical release. Of the three, it benefits most from the additional material.
Fellowship is the best of the three, but ROTK earned every Oscar it won that night. I remember watching the ceremony thinking, “Holy cow! They’re going to win all 11 of their nominations!” It would have broken the record had Sean Aston been nominated in the Supporting Actor category like he should have been…

Honestly, go with Blu Ray. 4K is so high definition that it makes everything (Gollum in particular) look fake.

Yeah, it was a big mistake to leave out the flashback at Osgiliath since Faramir simply comes across as a dick in the theatrical release while you very much understand him in the Extended Editions.

Id avoid ROTK in 4K. The graphics/CGI doesnt do too well in 4k.
I guess i'll do a rewatch too now though.
I remember watching FOTR in the theatre with two of my buddies and their parents, I think I was 15. Their parents walked out when Saruman started swinging Gandalf with his staff because it was too creepy for them.

Even the Council of Elrond looks weird in 4K. Seriously, do Blu Ray. It’s way better quality. Keep 4K for movies like Top Gun.
