But seriously, I think that would be a cool bet...which character is going to sacrifice themself(or selves)?
Ben and Sawyer.
this... i have no hopes of sawyer surviving and i dont want him to,even though he is one of my favorites on the show. I think it would be a perfect ending for him. From the guy in season one who was a loner and didn't give a damn about anyone else to the guy who gives his life to help others.

Claire and Jack are blood, that has to at least keep her out of the negatives

Yep, both need redemption and with probably get it through sacrifice for the greater good.

Claire seems to be strong in the Dark Side of the Force as well.

It could be the darkness infecting you, do you happen to have any volcanic ash handy and perhaps a hot poker?

How bizarre would it be that the failsafe plan is for Desmond to go down the light waterslide and become an equal, only be it a good intending combatant to MIB? The sacrifice being attached to the island too. Did Widmore tell MIB not to throw Desmond into the briar patch?

I can't believe no one has commented on this yet, but there was something weird going on with the mirrors in this episode.
First, when Jack wakes up at the beginning he looks in the mirror and has a cut on his neck (the same cut from the plane in the 1st ep.) It is on the left side of his neck until he looks in the mirror and then it is on the right side of his neck.
Also, when Ben is in the nurse's office looking in the mirror. He has his arm in a sling, but in the mirror it's the opposite arm.
Reminds me of Poltergeist III when everything in the mirror is actually an alternate universe.
If you didn't notice, watch it again.
Yep, Sun saw the same when she saw her forehead was bruised in the mirror, but she hurt her right forehead in island world rather than the left side. Ben hurt his right arm in island world (falling down the hole to the donkey wheel, I think).

Why the past tense? He's still drinking.

What if the fail-safe is to put the island underwater? If Jack cannot keep MIB from getting to the light, Desmond is there to put it underwater, and since MIB + Water = 1/0 then MIB could never get to the light, but then again neither could anyone else and life on the island would be no more.
Ben won't kill the candidates after hearing MIB's true plan.

I'm still trying to catch up from a few pages back but.... THIS!
This has been my feeling on the ending for a while. Well said.

i mean there's a big reason we see the island underwater in the alt.
i thought this episode was pretty solid.
while i do wish widmore had been given a more substantial ending considering his character throughout the run of the show it's obvious the writers are trimming the fat quickly heading into the finale.
i also like the re-emergence of ben as a factor in the show.
does anyone else think the show is going to end with the island being destroyed (without actually showing it being destroyed a la the white lite at the end of season 5) by desmond (and MIB with it) desmond turning to jack and saying "see you in another life brotha"
and them ending with the alt timeline with alt desmond meeting alt jack or some other kind of touchy feeling ending with the alt being the real timeline.
because destroying the island with MIB on it thus destroying him actually saves the world not ends it?
This has been my feeling on the ending for a while. Well said.
