Lost series finale to be even longer on DVD/Bluray release

Turns out two and a half hours just wasn't enough screen time for Lost producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse to tell the whole story they wanted to tell us. An ABC source confirms to me that after Sunday’s series finale, airs from 9 – 11:30 pm ET/PT, the season six DVD (as well as the complete series collection, out on DVD and Blu-ray August 24) will continue the saga with upwards of twenty minutes of additional storyline. “It’s in production now,” confirms the source, who couldn’t yet confirm the actual running time of the new scenes. “Damon and Carlton wanted to offer fans answers to additional questions they couldn’t get to in the body of the final show.”

I took it as Jacob was just responding directly to Sawyer when he said, "Your monster friend said there was nothing to protect it from". A natural response from Jacob is that it needs protection from "him"

The writer's/director's commentary should be very interesting

The commentary I'm looking most forward to is "Across the Sea" which they said they just finished recording when they started their podcast. That should certainly be an interesting one.

He directly said last night that the protector's main duty is to protect the Light.
I don't see any way for it to end but for the darkness to still be trapped/contained on the island:
1. The Island is the source of the light of the world. Mother said something like if that light goes out and then it goes out in the rest of the world. The light must be protected for the world to survive as we/they know it.
2. If MIB escapes from the island then the world will be infected by his darkness even if the island/light remains in tact. There can't be a happy ending if MIB escapes and I am sure there will be at least some measure of a happy ending.
3. Balance is an overriding theme in LOST. There can me no understanding of light without darkness. Choices determine our fate/destiny. Love and hate or opposite concepts; one cannot exist without the other. Scientific investigation requires faith that answers can be found, etc. Neither the light or the darkness will be destroyed; one cannot exist without the other.
4. There are obviously many ways the writers could end it but if the flash sideways timeline is relevant (and the writers have said it is) then one way would be that the destruction of the island in the original 2007 timeline restores/lifts up the sunken island in 2004 timeline enabled by Desmond's unique ability to withstand EM radiation in the light along with a coordinated team effort in the 2004 timeline. The original 2007 timeline disappears and the flash sideways 2004 timeline becomes the new reality. This in effect becomes a reset back to before Jacob was killed. The Losties have been redeemed. Jacob wins the game proving that humankind is worth saving. MIB remains contained on the island.
5. Another possibility is something our heroes do together as a team with Desmond's coordination in the flash sideways 2004 timeline directly influences Desmond's effort to destroy or contain MIB in the 2007 timeline. My guess is MIB will be lured into the light perhaps down at the donkey wheel at the bottom of the Orchid thinking that this will be his means of escape but which will actually cause the darkness to be once again merged with/contained by the light by some means related to Desmond's unique ability associated with electromagnetism.
Per Faraday's comment about the flash sideways 2004 timeline NOT being what was supposed to happen, that timeline disappears, the Losties understand that they have sacrificed happier destinies to save the world and the 2007 timeline is maintained but of course with most of the cast dead. Sawyer might take a bullet from Claire to save Kate. Ben might shoot Claire in the process but refuses to kill Jack, Kate and Hurley and kills himself rather than let the darkness consume him; MIB will not kill the last person whom he could coerce into killing the new protector, Jack. My preference would be for Jack and Kate to remain and raise Aaron together on the island or Desmond and Penny remain to raise Charlie on the island but I can't see it being that mushy of an ending. I think it will likely be more obscure leaving the audience to wonder if the game continues with new pieces.
6. Or Ben becomes the worst antagonist in the history of a TV series, kills everyone including Jack. MIB tries to destroy the island in a final bid to be free of the light but Desmond "Fail-safe" Hume prevents the destruction which causes the darkness within MIB to be once again contained by the light. Desmond becomes the new protector.
7. Or Ben kills everyone but Desmond and then kills himself realizing the implications of his darkness. MIB is about to destroy or leave the island but John Locke's soul reinforced by influence from the flash sideways timeline shines through in MIB, MIB/Locke goes back into the light and the darkness is once again contained due to Desmond's influence on the EM associated with the light.
We are left to wonder what happens with the timelines or the island is destroyed in the '07 timeline but restored in '04 timeline, the '04 timeline becomes the new reality and everyone lives happily ever after, or the island is saved in the '07 timeline, the '04 timeline disappears when it reaches '07 and Desmond becomes the new protector. Desmond and Penny raise Charlie on the island.
8. Or....

This is very possible....

A million % agree with this.
All of it, especially what I highlighted. The happy ending will be just restoring the balance to the island, the world.

i like lots of this up to all the raising of the babies on the island stuff..i want it to end along the lines of Jack and Locke sitting on the beach after its all over and for the love of god can someone put a bullet in kate that will actually kills her, please

I love a good tidy happy ending a lot of times, but in this mythos of Lost, I am looking for a very bittersweet happy ending if that makes any sense.

makes perfect sense, i want it to be happy and sad, all of it. I want characters that i truly like to die (and Kate as well), sacrificing themselves for the greater good and all that.

In typical arab fashion?

And I think that's what we will get. Restoring the balance will not come without a cost/redemption.

No, never.
But seriously, I think that would be a cool bet...which character is going to sacrifice themself(or selves)?

they should splice in Qui Gon Jinn on his death bed telling OBI WAN to train the boy because "he will be....the one...who ..... ugh....cough...almost dead....Bring balance to the for...ugh...force."

I am laying a bet on Hugo.
He's been awfully quiet lately. It was him that won the lottery with the numbers. He's the type which would sacrifice himself...which actually makes him not a likely one now...
Maybe Lapidus? If still alive.
I'm just thinking it will be someone other than a major character for some reason. I'll probably be wrong. I am always wrong when it comes to guessing this show.
