Basically, I have as well... That's kinda why I think Widmore is trying to kill them all - two versions of the same person existing at once is a basic time/space continuum no-no.

Illana said something to that effect

If this is correct and we happen to see him in his original form...wouldn't he be in the form of Jacob? (assuming MIB was being literal when he said Jacob took his body)
He may have meant that Jacob turned him into the Black Smoke, to where he feels that Jacob literally did take his body.
But to answer your question, if MIB is to be taken literally, probably.

All she said was that he is trapped in that form now.

MIB has no place in the alt timeline, no way no how.
if he was roaming around free there would be no alt timeline there would be nothing.

and you felt that was due to them burying Locke's body?
curious, that never crossed my mind

Damon and Carlton confirmed it a while back in a podcast that it was some sort of a consequence of MIB killing Jacob.

i don't see how anybody could have a positive reaction to what just happened. i thought it was one of the worst episodes not just of the season, but of the series. i thought the plot was really forced and the character's acted unrealistically.
zoey showing up, acting all badass, making threats to a giant plume of black smoke? whitmore should know that isn't gonna cut it. i guess it demonstrates that the recent speculation of him being benevolent was just that, speculation. but to show up like that seemed silly.
Sawyer's remarks to kate were completely unrealistic- "its like someone is trying to bring us together." who would say that? and good thing kate was wearing a leather vest in the police station, i forgot she was a fugitive- because rebels wear leather jackets. this isn't happy days.
jacks reaction to being called for surgery reminded me of tom green taking that phone call in the restaurant scene from freddy got fingered. and we get it- jack has a kid and they have a good relationship, i don't need all the seventh heaven moments to remind me.
but i also thought happily ever after was subpar and last week's episode was awesome. we get a week off too. i am sure it will sit better after a re-watch.

Well, it would tie up the loose end of why Christian's body was not in the casket.
It's plausible.

Agree. That was one of the best episodes of the series.

Yeah the characters did do things they probably shouldn't...
since the beginning Lost has been totally realistic and now in the final season they jump ship with characters doing things that may not make sense at the time.
i mean time travel... black smoke monsters... and islands that mysteriously disappear totally makes sense but now that the characters are starting to say and do things weird, this show has jumped ship.

It was different
that was one of it not the most straightforward episode ever. But I would expect it - we're near the end, there isnt much time to open any new doors

It makes sense to me. Maybe MIB can take the form of dead people who haven't been buried but prior to killing Jacob, he was able to switch into anyone. Once Jacob dies he can only stay in one form. Dunno.
Good chance this is why the Others demanded the bodies of the people that had been killed so they could bury them. Maybe they knew that MIB could take their form if they weren't buried.

simple question did desmond die in the island timeline
I know the show didn't show us
I personally think he didn't die and he somehow help Desmond out so he will live or whatever. I personally think they showed desmond as to big of a role to just kill him off like that in the island but maybe he did die who knows
