Go ahead. Try it. Jack needs the emotional growth from the death of juliet, and real john locke. He needs his own test of faith with the dynamite. I'm sure I'm missing a whole bunch...But to just throw it in to Season 4 would have seemed forced.

If the island was purgatory then how the he'll did people like Richard get there? He was clearly alive when he arrived. Same with Ben, Juliette, and everyone who was ever in Darma unless you think they were just pretend characters in the minds of the dead plane crash victims.
Throw in the fact that Christian clearly said it happened and the answer is fairly obvious.

And that ultimately is my main gripe - that everything is "because it is".
I don't need the answers to everything, nor do I want them. But when nearly everything doesn't have any sort of explanation other than "because", it takes away a lot of the purpose and motivation of these characters because there is no "why" just the "what".
