Aaron was still a Baby in the church.

Sun and Jin conceived on the island thus there was no pregnancy.

Explain to me why Aaron was still a baby in the church.

explain why people not on the flight were in the church?

Maybe the plane landed on them so it counts.

processing the ending is kind of depressing, the warm happy feeling you got when all the dead losties got their second chances goes to shite when you realize they just been hanging out in purg world

The entire show was Jack's acceptance of death. Slo is right the after-crash never happened.

He hinted that this might be it on Kimmel.

What the hell is Hurley supposed to be still protecting the island from?

absolute biggest fail of the whole 2.5 hours. In the end it looks a hell of a lot like MIB was right. There was no point to any of it.

Because it's Jack's perception of purgatory.

The same reason why Sawyer, Kate, Penny, etc. are all the same age as the last time Jack saw them even though they lived longer than he did.

It wasn't the the fact they were on the same flight that brought them together. It was their relationships and attachments and experiences that they shared that brought them together.

Yal are making this too complex.

Sure the delivery was not as clear as it could have been but...

The writers were trying to be crystal clear in the finale:

The island REALLY happened.
The light IS the spark of life. Without it there is no purgatory, heaven.
Jack made sure it was preserved.
Once that occurs he moves on to the afterlife.

The point being, had Jack NOT preserved the light. purgatory and the afterlife would cease to exist.

Now I do think they may have originally meant to go in the true purgatory direction, but it is obvious they were trying to clearly communicate the island as the key to the afterlife and preserving it, preserved themselves.

If you're a television writer, you have an idea for a show and where you want to go with it. One thing that you don't know is whether your pilot will get picked up. Further, how can you be sure it will last more than a season or two. I'm betting once it got picked up for multiple seasons, the writers had to figure out a way to extend the story and so it takes a new path. They then use the flash sideways to bring back in the purgatory element so they could end the series how they always wanted to.

Right but instead of keeping the show on the original path and extending it, the writers were only bright enough to think of convuluted ways to extend the show.

they filled a role. not sure how you could call them pointless.

They were "forced" to fill a role. They became unnecessary as the show ended. What they "did" could have been handled more effectively and efficiently without them. But that is a problem with a show as a whole. Many many things were forced.

You can say they "filled a hole" only because you only think about what you see on the show, not what you don't see.

I'd give you an example if you want. You have to break down characters (all writers should) into their arcs, their motivations, desires and flaws.

MTV: There was also talk that you were the initial choice to play Jack on "Lost." True?

Keaton: Yeah. J.J. [Abrams] called me and he said, "I know you don't want to do a television show but just hear me out." Here's what the idea was: He created this huge setup in the pilot episode with this guy who looks to be the lead or the hero. He has all those earmarks. And then all of a sudden he dies in the middle. I had to go think about it. And what happened was he went to [ABC] and said, "Here's how it works." And they said, "Nah." I think they read it and thought, "No, you've got to keep that guy alive." And then I was out of that.

basically shows a clip from episode 1 this season, where the plane is hitting turbulance - jack is making his faces and that in essence he is going through the whole "acceptance" in a matter of seconds and dies right there

So did they die after the crash or they were all alive and the island was real?
