This is what I thought also, except Ben, Dez, Juliet, etc.. were not on the plane.

If you're a television writer, you have an idea for a show and where you want to go with it. One thing that you don't know is whether your pilot will get picked up. Further, how can you be sure it will last more than a season or two. I'm betting once it got picked up for multiple seasons, the writers had to figure out a way to extend the story and so it takes a new path. They then use the flash sideways to bring back in the purgatory element so they could end the series how they always wanted to.
