While I was watching it, I kinda felt like I did during Crystal Skull. Don't get me wrong, this LOST episode wasn't THAT bad, but the point remains.
During Indy 4, I just kept waiting for it to get better. Then at about the hour mark I realized it wasn't.
Last night at about the 40 minute mark the same feeling came over me.
And I was all like.

Was feeling the same way, thinking surely the final scene will blow my face off, but it didn't happen.

I've only been following these threads since March, so how does this rank among LOST fan melt downs?

Last night was bad for me.
But this morning I am hopeful. Trusting that they will not let us down.

This has easily been the worst since I've been around. With episodes like "Recon" and especially "What Kate Does", there weren't high expectations, so we mostly let those crappy episodes slide. But there was "Ab Aeterno" expectations going into this episode, and it turned out to be the worst episode of the season. I'm going to rewatch this in about an hour and just dissect it scene by scene on why this episode was terrible.

I was really disillusioned during the end of Season 2 and parts of Season 3. That's when they were just ambling along without any real direction.
But once they set a timetable for the series things picked up and started moving forward.
But I felt worse last night than I ever did during Seasons 2 and 3.

i am cool with the episode... slept on it and its not really that bad
i have a feeling that we will have an explanation to why MIB cant leave, why he is bad, why jacob is good, and a few other things in the next week.
this episode was in a good spot. it is meant to break away from the original timeline just to give a bit of background on MIB and Jacob.
The light is nothing more than some sort of energy and electromagnetism. Dharma obviously finds it a source of power so I am cool with that.
Its way back in the past, so the magical explanation is cool with me. They don't have computers and complicated mathematics like Faraday in order to explain what it is, so its just magic.
We know its special, Faraday has said that, Dharma has said that.
The episode was a lot better after sleeping on it.
In response to Tiger Ryno...
Welliver and Pelligrino were very good actors last night (although Jacob was kind of a whiny rich kid douche)
The kids however were not good actors... the kid playing MIB was absolutely horrible, but i blame that on the fact that no kids are really great actors.

I am enjoying this season but I don't feel like it flows with the series. It feels like they are trying to wrap it up quickly rather than gradually. I think a lot of what has gone on this season should have started last season.

The thing that baffled me most about the episode was MIB's explanation for what the frick he was doing with the wheel. I need to rewatch that scene and pay closer attention to what he says, but his explanation for how the light + the water + the wheel were supposed to get him off the island made no sense to me. Then she asked him how he knew it would work and his response was, "I just know."

It bugs me because it truly seems as though it was rushed along, no thought was put into it and they just threw some crap out there. They've spent years and years developing this intricate story and to drop this turd at the end almost seems as though it was a betrayal to the many fans out there. If you're going to do something half-arse, just dont do it at all

absolutely 100% what I am trying to avoid doing

Regarding the frozen donkey wheel.
When Ben and Locke went down to the wheel through the Orchid station, the drop was very, very deep. Hundreds of feet down. Not just at the bottom of a well.
So it couldn't have been the same place unless they dug deeper.
Just a thought.

Just finished watching it and read through a lot of this thread, and I think the episode is better (at the very least not as bad) upon reflection. Some thoughts.
My opinion while watching it was that mom had some smokie in her. Maybe she has learned how to use the "light" inside her, and I guess that's how she (and Jacob) are able to heal and do other things such as grant eternal life/agelessness. That's if you're looking for a further explanation, which I'm not.
I had the Adam & Even thing spoiled for me, so that packed less of a punch. There was also no need whatsoever to include the Jack/Kate discovery in the caves. Obvious, hit-you-over-the-head-with-the-answer moments have never worked for this show.
Unlike some, I don't need anything else about the statue/origins of the Others. Jacob tried to create a society with "good" people, bringing them to the island. At some point over the course of 2000 years they built some giant-arse buildings. Jacob decided to move into one of them. I'm cool with it.
Not sure if this has been mentioned but it seemed clear to me that the Temple was built on top of the light-cave.
I'm OK with the light explanation. The light is the EM energy or whatever. It's obviously not all gone b/c there is still some in the pocket behind the wheel and the Swan site.
MIB's smokie-ness is obviously an "unpredictable" side effect of going into the light-cave (just as Desmond experienced time-jumping abilities as a result of the failsafe detonation). But it sounds like some people are saying that MIB is completely dead, and that the smoke monster is an entirely different entity, originating from the light-cave. Maybe I read it wrong, idk. Anyway, MIB=smokie. Just to steer us back on course, people.
I think I may have been less upset with the episode had I not been reading these threads where you eventually convince yourself you need to know everything, and if you don't get it now youw gonna be reawy reawy huwwwt.
Here's to an epic next week and a half!

I was just about to ask about this. It made no sense.
I'm going to build this wheel to connect with the light and water, and it will take me away. How does he know that?

This was pretty lame. Seems like the only thing that could save it is if somehow time travel were involved. If people were able to travel/see into the future to see how some more advanced people could develop the wheel, that could explain how he knows what he knows. Otherwise, it's weak.

This is the worst meltdown. You have never seen me or a few others on here bashing the writers before but last night did it.
And to echo a previous post, how fricking weak was MIB's explanation on how the donkey wheel works? "I'm going to turn this and mix the water and light in the mechanism and it will get me off the island." WHAT??? Seriously, what? You going to mix water with the light. The same light that resides at the end of a stream. Awesome. Again, those must have been some brilliant guys we has hanging out with.
We were also supposed to learn more about why MIB wants to leave the island. That was the summary for the episode and led us to believe it was the main goal. We learned that he wants to leave the island because...........he wants to. He feels trapped. Well we already knew that as well. Why is he trapped? How is he trapped?

quote:You could do that with a lot of LOST episodes FWIW. There have been several, what I would call "perfect," episodes. Then there are some in between and some that are terrible. This one wasn't terrible for me, more of an in-betweener. But I think it's because my expectations were no where near what you guys who hated it were. Also, why would you want to relive your agony?

I think the writers were hinting at him having some kind of supernatural intuition or clairvoyance. Since he had the same response when Jacob asked him how he knew how to play the backgammon game he found.
ETA: Then his mother called him "special."
