There is no way I would read spoilers to lost. It's so much better when they are presented to you for the first time during the show.

pretty sure Jacobs analogy was that the island is the cork. He didn't tell Richard "I am the cork"
Yes, but because Jacob died (the cork), the MIB(the evil) is able to leave the island (the prison).

yeah, that maybe more accurate. I'd have to watch it again, but that could definitely be what they were implying.
I was shocked that so many people took it literally. Its fairly obvious, based on past events of the show, commentary from the producers, etc, that this is the case.

Question... why does MIB decide to kill some people (I'm assuming he's killing them) and not kill others?
What is the method to his madness?
Well his practical function on the Island is a judge, and I'd say that slave traders meet the requirement as pretty horrible people. Also he looks for people he thinks he can manipulate, so he spares those people.

ETA: IMO this was by far the best episode of this season so far, and it's not even close.

Nestor Carbonnell should win an emmy for this episode.

They REALLY trimmed the fat in this episode.

MIB is playing a game to get off the island. People, think of them as pawns, get their souls looked into. If he can use them they live. If not they die.
He took John down a hole and realized "here's a guy I can use". Everything else was designed to get John off the island, die, and come back.

MIB cannot kill a candidate through his own means but can get others to do it, just like he cant kill Jacob.
If one is not a candidate then the MIB can kill them if he decides they are of no use to him for one reason or another. When Eko is "absolved" from his sins and released from his own prison, the MIB decides he is of no use to him and kills him.

I love how they repeated that line again "it sure is nice to see you out of those chains".

How great was it when Richard said..."you wanna know something Jack??!! You're dead, you're all dead!! And you're in all Hell!!"
ETA: That was right up there with "Kate, We have to go back to the island!!!" from Through the Looking Glass in terms of WTF moments IMO.

i like how one of Jacob's people explains to sayid that he cant let MIB talk to him or its too late, and MIB used that same line towards richard.

Other than being a substitute for Christian, there was apparently no need to bring John's body back to the island. They've made it clearer that the MIB can transform into people not on the island. With that said, any random cadaver could have been packed on the plane in Christian's clothes.
I think there has to be more to it. Like...the MIB can stay in the form of a dead person who's body is on the island longer.

In no way do I think the Island is Hell because if it was, why would the two children be there? That just wouldn't make sense.
My theory is that the island is some type of purgatory or intermediate between heaven and Hell... for the MIB to be proved wrong, the 6 that were brought to the island as canidates will have to continue to perform the good deeds that they do in the alternate timeline until the two realities converge.
If the MIB gets off the island, I think he could possibly affect the realities somehow and never allow for the 6 to complete "progress"; thus they would go to Hell for their actions before they crashed on 815.
I think that all the 6 canidates will ultimatley be Jacobs replacement. Who said it just had to be one person? If somehow MIB gets off the island, he wins because it would "have all eneded the same".

I'm pretty sure the producers have explicitly stated that it isn't purgatory.
