Well it may not be literally below the island but the island is the "lid" keeping the evil (sin, leaven, hell) from seeping out and destroying the whole world. I guess.

Jesus Christ. The island is the prison, Jacob is the cork, and MIB is evil. Nothing to do with hell.

CE is right. The island isn't literally "over hell" with satan down there. Jacob explained it is many things, but most importantly, it is a darkness, like the infection now in Sayid and Claire, that is being kept at bay by the island.
It was clear that both Jacob and MiB were using "hell" because that was a term Richard could understand

Question... why does MIB decide to kill some people (I'm assuming he's killing them) and not kill others?

ETA: IMO this was by far the best episode of this season so far, and it's not even close.

pretty sure Jacobs analogy was that the island is the cork. He didn't tell Richard "I am the cork"
