Reading some wikipedia about Sauron, and they have descriptions of the first and second ages of the Lord of the Rings world. I think it will only be a matter of time, until they decide to make these stories as movies.

They are already using stories from the appendices for The Hobbit. I don't think they'll do The Silmarrilon any time soon

I'm pretty sure Christopher Tolkein never sold the film rights to The Silmarillion. After the Peter Jackson films he definitely won't sell them now.

I know it's wishful thinking, but Dagor-nuin-Giliath and the War of Wrath would be great to see on the big screen.

ETA: Actually, all of the battles of Beleriand would be bad arse.

That book was a nightmare, but it and the Book of Lost Tales really do give you some good background such as teaching you about the Wizards and how they are Sauron's equals even though they cant use their power.

I've been saying for a long time that this done as an HBO series could be pretty good.

An HBO series of the Silmarillion would be pretty cool. They would have close to 5000 years of history to adapt.

I'd buy that shite. Then I'd buy the extended edition directors cut. Then I'd buy it again on the next generation format once bluray goes out.

ETA: I'd also take an animated series. But, good CGI animation (a la Beowulf).

Needs to happen IMO and I think it eventually will. One day. Too much money on the table for it not to be done eventually.

I tried reading the Silmarillion in junior high after the LOTRs. Couldn't do it, but have read some of the synopsis stuff in the book on wiki and other places and there is more than enough quality material for a trilogy or however many movies they want to make.

In Tolkien's letters, the author noted that Sauron "was of course a 'divine' person (in the terms of this mythology; a lesser member of the race of Valar)."[7] Though less mighty than the chief Valar, he was more powerful than many of his fellow Maiar; Tolkien noted that he was of a "far higher order" than the Maiar who later came to Middle-earth as the Wizards Gandalf and Saruman.[

The Valar told them not to IIRC. I think it had to do with them wanting the wizards to inspire the people of middle earth and they werent meant to rule them.

None of that makes any sense.

The wizards weren't sent to Middle Earth to directly fight Sauron, thus they were not allowed to use their full power. Now I don't know if that means they really couldn't even if they wanted to, or if it was just simply an order.

Now were they Sauron's equals? I guess it depends on which Sauron you are talking about. With the ring? Not even close. Without? Pretty close imo.

Okay so in Tolkien's mythology there is a god called something I can't remember. His most powerful angels are Valar and the lesser angels/spirits are maiar. They are all ainur when not physically in the world.
