Tolkien specifically spells out the appearance and different Houses of the Elves.
There are no 'sub races' of Elves.

Having a sub-race of elves NECESSARILY opens up the world in a way I am confident the showrunners didn't foresee.
But there needs to be exposition
A black race of elves can't develop amongst white elves.
It has to have developed distantly AND isolated. May require more than a bit of exposition. . .and suggests a land outside of what we know as Middle Earth
