I prefer The Hobbit over both, though.

Without lord of the rings there is no game of thrones. Also, lord of the rings has the advantage of being done, while game of thrones could still bomb at be end.
That said, I'm significantly more captivated by game of thrones, so that's what I'll go with.

LOTR Books and Movies minus the Eowyn reveal in Return of the King are better so frick off.
FIFY. The way the movie RotK ruined the Eowyn reveal - with Merry saying "my lady" after being picked up by her when the Riders of Rohan attempted to leave him behind - almost ruined the rest of the movie for me.
But Lord of the Rings is infinitely better than A Song of Ice and Fire.

lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones
Maybe I missed it as I only saw it once:
LOTR- dude walks a ring to a lava pit over 3 movies, with just some fighting scenes with weird looking creatures mixed in
GOT- 20 different main characters, like a maze, not knowing which to follow to the end.
I like the complexity of GOT, and never understood what the fascination with the Ring was anyway.

lol right
GoT and LOTR are both in my hall of fame, but in the end LOTR is a better written book

Godfather - dude takes over family business after dad dies, with some murder and family bickering mixed in
GOT - noble families struggle for control of the kingdom, with some white zombies and foreigners mixed in

Books-wise, they are on a level playing field and are both fantastic.
Movies/tv show-wise, GoT cant even hold LOTR's jockstrap and I'm offended by the question. It's like asking if the Godfather or the tv mini-series about the Teflon Don is better.

Oh, and don't make me choose between the two OP. Tolkien, to me, is up there with Homer and Vergil. And reading the four main books plus The Silmarillion I would equate with... shite, I don't know. Words can't express it for me at this time. But as soon as I finished reading ASoIaF I started reading it again. I've never done that. I also have the companion book A World of Ice and Fire as well as A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. So let me just love them like two paternal twins. Only one stayed in the womb for an extra forty years.
god damn dude.
I also have a shared love of LoTR and GoT but I don't think it goes quite that far. LoTR is more beautiful and idealistic but GoT is dirtier and far more true to life. It's really tough to choose between the two. I think I'll go with GoT but my answer may change as I go through the phases of my own life.
I wonder if I'll ever be idealistic again though.

Well, the production value is just so much higher on LoTR. So I do agree. But look at how many more hours of screen time you have with GoT. You just can't keep up the quality for something that expansive without an infinite budget. I've been dissapointed several times with how they handle individual scenes though.
That scene with the Mountain just sitting around killing people was just shameful. God could they find some other way to give the dude a little depth of character? He's not just a Hodor with a temper, he's a fricking a-hole. They never got that down in the show.

Put me in the camp that thinks LOTR is way better.
And GOT is my favorite TV show of all time.

Overall I like GoT better but I can admit LOTR is better.

Two very different styles of the same genre. I've read and watched both and both have exceeded my expectations on screen. GoT obviously has more characters and sub-plots, and so far they have nailed the casting of those characters. You don't really know the motives of every character and there's no clear good/evil theme that envelopes the series the way it does in LotR. Of course, a series that has spanned 5 seasons so far allows you this option for character development and fruition of motive. For that reason I would pick GoT if I had to choose.

Not really a fair comparison. Would you be offended if someone said which was better the Godfather or the Sopranos?
Personally, I love LotR, but I find Game of Thrones infinitely more intriguing, complex, and entertaining.

J. R. R. Tolkien > George R. R. Martin and it's not really a debate
