LOTR

LOTR is high art. It's almost religious in significance.

GOT is a lot of fun (other than the Dany chapters - TV viewers like them because she's attractive and shows off her assets, but book readers universally dread those chapters because they're boring and pointless) but it's basically a graphic novel without pictures. It's not an exhaled work of literary greatness and the Bible/Eddas/Gilgamesh of our era like LOTR is.

Buddy, I'm not doubting any of what you say, but as I stated earlier I am only talking about the television show and movies. I have not read any books in either series and have only looked into the more when I felt like I was really missing something on the show, so although the story of middle earth may be extraordinary, there was nothing in the 3 movies I watched the captivated me to the level of intrigue that GoT has so far. Not that I don't absolutely love Lotr because I do, but I prefer GoT.

I think you have GoT confused with Twilight. Either that or you're a huge troll.

He was paraphrasing what King said about Harry Potter and Twilight.

Stephen King never actually said any of that shite. Just an FYI, someone attributed the quote to him and the internet took it and ran with it.

Or if you've touched a boob.

A well written story finds a way to offer exposition without an accompanying encyclopedia to make it interesting.

ASOIAF is good even without the encyclopedia, which is largely unnecessary.

I tried reading it. It was boring as shite.

I've read LOTR 5 or 6 times.

Not a real fan, I guess.

You actually do get a hint of this when Galadriel gives Frodo the light of Earendil. Earendil basically sails the sky in his boat with the last remaining silmaril attached to the crown on his head, which guides the way back to Valinor, the Undying Lands. That light was captured in that bottle as well and used to ward off Shelob, the giant spider that was the offspring of Morgoth and Ungoliant.

The Dany chapters in the first 3 books were awesome. The Dany chapters in the latest book were god awful as she regressed significantly and was stuck in Mereen forever, which Martin had to do to get all the characters in place like he wanted.

I love the Silmarillion. It might be my favorite fantasy book period, and I have read over one hundred of them.

I also really enjoy encyclopedias. I am making my way through the new Wheel of Time encyclopedia, which is over 800 pages. I've jumped around by have read about half so far.

But I felt Silmarillion read more like a Norwegian myth or ballad, which was the intent, along the vein of Beowulf.

Just from a time perspective, I'd take the best 9 1/2 hours of GoT over LotR.

But there is A LOT more crap in GoT than LotR.

Close call.

I've read an encyclopedia for ASOIAF and it made understanding everything so much easier.

While it isn't necessary, I recommend everyone who asks about going about reading the series to do so. Same with Lord of the Rings and the Silmarillion.
