Since ive run through different things to watch while locked down, I decided to rewatch game of thrones for the first time since the disaster of a finale.
I will freely admit that I thought the final season was disappoint and that DB Weiss and David Benioff should be beaten for it when it initially came out.
A few thoughts as so far I just finished from season 1 episode 1 to the battle of winterfell. At this point I feel like season 8 was still good, The battle at night looked great on my tv. I did feel more major characters should die in the battle and even that perhaps they should lose and have to flee south.
I know it does start ro really unravel in the next episode with some silly choices, but the actual battle in kings landing was great filming.
its left me wondering if the two year break really hurt them as it raised epecations so high and they managed to muck it up with bad story line and stupid mistakes like a coffee cup.
Would GOT have been better off at season 7 with 10 episodes and season 8 with 10 episodes and basically the same ending?

i pretend everything after S4 didn't happen. those first 4 season were the pinnacle of modern TV

Season 7 wasn’t that bad just way to rushed. Season 8 was horrible and even more rushed
Those seasons were screwed when they decided not to do 10 episode seasons

The fact that this is the first GOT rewatch thread since the stay at home order to my knowledge tells you all you need to know about how much of a screw up that final season was.

Not having these two seasons be 10 episodes was their biggest mistake. With more episodes, the events would not have been as rushed and could have been placed in better context IMO.
But the reality is that GRRM is a far better writer than the HBO team. Not a knock on them, but it’s his world and his characters. He screwed them by not finishing his series in time.

Yes, they were that bad. HBO, the two morons, and the fat man should all be embarrassed.
You’d think there’d be at least one person at HBO that would have seen the unmitigated disaster those two seasons were, especially the final season, and changed some things.

Meh.
Let's put it this way - GoT was on its way to being my absolute favorite show, ever. Those last 2 Seasons have put me off ever looking at it again.
Never frick up the ending (looking at you, as well, Lost).

There were some satisfying moments in between the drivel. Seeing the Starks reunited, certain plots advanced etc. was good but what we got was a jumbled and rushed shell of what could have been.

Jon going north of the Wall to bring back a wight to convince batshit crazy Cersei to join their cause is the dumbest thing to have happened on the show as a whole.

Just pretend the episode where Dany is on the boats returning to Westeros the series finale.

At least LOST's ending is polarizing and it didn't frick up all the characters (save for Sayid). Everyone was actually looking forward to the finale and plenty will still defend it.
Game of Thrones though I saw no one defending the end. Some were defending "The Long Night" for a couple of days, but that came to an end pretty quickly. No one defends the last 3 episodes. It was a moment of national unity on how much that final season sucked.

Sad that for most of its run GOT was an awesome show. Too bad it will not be remembered and nobody will rewatch. It will never get the recognition that the early seasons deserve.

It's surreal to think that S8 wasn't even a full year ago yet.
What was such a universally shared series got dropped as soon as it was done because we just wanted to get over and forget how badly they fricked it up.

Getting to the end an realizing of shite we dropped too many plotlines to reach the ending and then sprinting through it was pretty dumb.
But they got fired from Star Wars of all the things to Sprint for in this day and age.

Yea season 7 worst mistake was the warp speed travel.

The cinematography of the final season was spectacular in most cases. The acting remained stellar. They problem was the writing.
They dumbed Jon Snow down to a dour dolt whose entire existence could be whittled down to "Ah dun wan it" and "She's muh queen". They turned Varys from a master of intrigue into a fricking retard. They wrecked Jamie's redemption arc. I have no problem with Daenerys going mad like her father, but the transformation was sloppy and rushed. The bells drive her insane? What is she? A dragon-riding Quasimodo with tits? A do not get me started on "Bran the Broken", frick all that shite.

I didnt think 5 and 6 were that bad. Season 4 was its peak, imo, then a slow dropoff for 5 and 6. Then they jumped off a cliff in season 7
