He wasn't a horrible fighter when he fought Rocky in the early rounds.

Apollo was a better version of what he trained to Rocky to be, and he KO'd Clubber in the 3rd with that style.
Apollo was also much bigger than Rocky and those Clubber punches wouldn't have had the same effect on him as they did a 180-190lb Rocky Balboa.
Apollo was never even knocked down until Rocky got him in their 1st fight with a surprise body shot.
Had Apollo been a real life fighter with that kind of resume in that era, he would be regarded as the undisputed best boxer of the modern era.

Apollo wasn't that much bigger than Rocky in weight. His punches weren't as powerful but he made it up with quick jabs and was quicker than Rocky who didn't take many punches to the face.
Rocky had an iron chin and it was much better than Apollo. Rocky took massive power punches to the face and still kept going against Lang.
If Apollo did the same with Lang the he would be on the ground real quick.
Apollo suffered internal bleeding and some broken ribs I believe in the first fight. He kept Rocky at a distance with his jabs for most of the fight until the end. Rocky wrecked his abdomen and I believe as a result Apollo had problems breathing during the fight.
If a boxer had a punch that was 3,000 psi then rest assured that boxer would be undisputed GOAT.
