This. He always seemed to steal the scene if he was in it.

Correct.

Glenn Morshower is a great example. He can play pretty much any part, as long as it’s a military officer.

I'll go with actors I'd like to see more of.

Kurt Russell
Bryan Cranston
Ted Levine
JK Simmons
James Cromwell
Charles Dance
William Fichtner is always decent
Gary Oldman
Alexander Skarsgård

I'd throw any of them in a film.

Kurt Russell

Kurt might be finishing up his career but he's a bona fide movie star. He might be taking smaller roles now so he doesn't have to carry a movie but for a long time Kurt was box office royalty.

Strother Martin is pretty much the definition of a character actor, and one who usually stole the scene whenever he was in a movie.

He delivered one of my all time favorite scenes in Slapshot. "Piss on old time hockey! Those people came here to see the Chiefs! The toughest team in the Federal League! Not you bunch of... pussies."

Just the way he delivered that last line was pitch perfect. A blend of disgust and disappointment.

I agree, but unlike a lot of action stars..Kurt can do it all.

Comedy, action, drama, romance, sci fi, horror, biographies, voice over work..etc. good guy..bad guy..there is a reason he is bankable.

ETA

He totally carried Tango and Cash imo

Could you imagine Cool Hand Luke without Strother Martin?

Fred Thompson was a good one through 2015.

Some of my favorites, through the years.

Charles Coburn was Sir Francis 'Piggy' Beekman in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, 'Colonel' Harrington in The Lady Eve, and Benjamin Dingle in The More the Merrier.

Andy Devine was Buck from Stagecoach, The Cheery Soldier in The Red Badge of Courage, Sheriff Appleyard in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valince,

Arthur Kennedy played reporter Jackson Bentley in Lawrence of Arabia, played daddy rapist, Lucas Cross in Peyton Place, and played banker brother to Sinatra in Some Came Running.

Thelma Ritter was in The Misfits with Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, Montgomery Clift, and Eli Wallach. Was in Pillow Talk with Doris Day and Rock Hudson. How the West Was Won, and Birdman of Alcatraz.

You could ask that same question about a lot of the actors in that movie.

David Morse had a staring role in some movies like The Indian Runner with Viggo Mortensen, Patricia Arquette and Charles Bronson. but is usually just a piece of the puzzle. Was in The Good Son, The Getaway with Alec Baldwin, Kim Basinger, & another character actor, Michael Madsen. Was Dr. Peters in 12 Monkeys. A Major in The Rock. Was a killer in The Long Kiss Goodnight. In Contact, The Green Mile, 16 Blocks, Disturbia, The Hurt Locker, Drive Angry, and many more. Those cold eyes make him a good killer, soldier, cop, etc. He showed he had a heart in The Green Mile and the Indian Runner.

He's a good one 58 although he's probably been held back so,e by his height and baby face.

I remember he was in a memorable role with that Shia LaBeouf kid and played a serial killer if I am not mistaken. Another one was a western where all there gunslingers were caught in purgatory or something .... it's been awhile. But he definitely fits the bill as do some of the others you mentioned from back in the day in a previous post.
