For the last couple years i've mainly focused on watching movies that have come out that same year as to stay up to date and compile a legitimate list of my top movies of the year by time December rolls around. But, this year i've found myself catching up on older stuff i havent seen instead of making it a point to watch every single 2025 release. Some recent 80s movies ive watched:
Blue Velvet (1986)- A Lynch film to the core. Has his patented "disturbing underworld in a quaint town" angle. You can tell this paved the way for Twin Peaks and his later works. Wasn't bad, just super weird and i normally like weird stuff. Hopper with one of the most disturbing performances ever. There's alot to unpack thematically but i didnt feel like digging to deep into it after it was over.
Raging Bull (1980)-Great movie. Loved the black and white style and of course great performances from Pesci and Deniro. Didnt know anything about Jake Lamotta so was very interesting.
Once Upon A Time in America (1984-Directors Cut)-Absolute Masterpiece. Put on a pot of coffee and was up half the night watching this (4 hours long) and loved every minute of it. Was expecting a run-of-the-mill New York gangster movie, but it had an incredibly intriguing story with great performances and an outstanding score. The rape scenes were tough but i thought necessary to not glamorize these guys like other mob movies do.
River's Edge (1986)- Much darker tone than most of the 80s teen movies of this era. It was decent enough with a good performance from a young Keanu Reeves. I thought Crispin Glover's character was way over the top and annoying, though.

Glover's character, and his butchered Beetle were annoying. I enjoyed the movie, but was confused about some of it right after I saw it. Took watching it again when it came out on cable to feel like I understood what I had watched. Haven't seen it in years, but I remember Keanu's character, his gf and his little brother were the only characters I liked.
For some reason I thought it was set in Seattle, but it's supposed to be Northern Cali. I may have been told it was based on a murder in Seattle. The kids dressed really grungy, Maybe that's why I thought that.
Most of the cast reminded me of stoners I knew growing up. I don't think any of them ever killed someone, but I ran around with some guys that liked getting high. Lot's of times insanity happened afterwards.

Right, it had a few things going on. I think some of it was a shot at the 80s teen culture at the time being all about "sex, drugs, and rock n roll" and the idea that their lack of values or self worth caused them to have no feeling or any type of empathy towards their dead friend, which is what their teacher blew up about towards the end. It wasn't until the funeral at the end they showed any sort of remorse.

I loved the God's Must Be Crazy. I think the same phenomenon with the bottle is happening in South American tribes because kids are getting cell phones. They are not used to that.

Once Upon A Time in America
It's a good movie I happen to rewatch recently myself.
Noodles has to be the least likable protagonist in any movie ever. He's just a violent low-life criminal at the end of the day, from childhood to adulthood. No redemption arc. But I guess even people like that can be humanized by showing their struggles and the world around them that shaped their awfulness.

Damn. Some dark and dreary movies there. That's some serious work for one weekend.
