Killers of the Flower Moon (Spoilers)

I thought it was a pretty good movie.
But for a movie 3 hours long, they sure did make some odd changes.
The most impactful part of the book is that Ernest Burkhesrt had planned for Molly and kids to spend the night at her sister’s the night they blew that house up and that gets fully left out of the movie.
This movie kinda falls apart if that’s actually depicted Ernest had meant to blow his family up but like that truly shows you how evil Ernest was. Hence why his son through his ashes off the side of a bridge in disgust.
I know it’s hinted at in the early montage but there are a couple of off hand comments, but I don’t think the movie does a great job of depicting how many murders were actually happening and that it was more than just the Hale game doing the killing
I think the big one missing was the guy who got killed on the train and was a major part of the investigation.
I also don’t think they really did the investigation justice. There were dozens of PIs and government men in the town doing investigations. That’s part of what made the book so fascinating. There were even counter PIs hired to mess with the investigations. We never really get a sense of scale or any of the undercover work that was happening. Or any of that.
I will say the main actress is fricking amazing. Now I think she’s too gullible to Ernest throughout the movie despite him being sketchy as shite and especially at the end but the actress did an amazing job.
I also didn’t like that Ernest saw Molly like 3 times post arrest. If I remember correctly she only saw him at the trial.
Overall good movie but I think it could have easily hit stronger some of the key points of interest from the book

It was just okay for me
Couple of things that stood out…
When Deniro is giving Leo the licks with the paddle, it really reminded me of those kicks he did in the Irishman
Also.. those stupid goggles he wears when he is in the car.. every time they showed them.. our theatre busted out laughing.. he looked like a bug and it was hilarious
I don’t see myself rewatching this one ever again.
Edit: I would’ve liked to have seen tbe original script they wrote before the massive rewrite.. Leo originally signed on for Tom white ( Plemons role) and he didn’t even show up until 2 hours into the movie so I would’ve like to have seen how that would’ve gone

Ok…. That would have been a better movie.
It’s been a long day

They completely rewrote the script to deemphasize the white investigators despite that being the focal point of the book. It was the first major investigation for the FBI and a turning point for that agency. I'll probably watch when it gets to streaming. Sounds like The Irishman part II: too long and only partly based on historic events.

Yes, they seriously downplayed the investigation portion and someone I was talking to got the impression that “it was an easy investigation”

They adapted it to emphasize the crimes because that allows the community, and the community's lack of action even as they knew what was happening, be more of the focus. Your inclusion of the word white is annoying, as this is still obviously focused on a few white characters, and Lily Gladstone.

I really want to see this, but at that length, it'll require a half day off work to have the time to go for that long

People online are ripping it

The ending was… like you tell
The story over 3.5 hours then steamroll
Through to quickly tell what happened to the characters … with some vaudevillian radio show as the mouthpiece to do it .. then Marty with the end cameo

yeah, the sports station i listen to, 3 people on the show are huge Scorsese fanboys and all hated it. Said it was way too long and editing was all over the place.
They read some bad reviews on Rotten Tomatoes that were certified fresh. Makes you wonder.

Downplay the white hero-FBI.
Emphasize the white villain-Leo and DeNiro.
Subvert expectations/history. Text book modern cinema.

Scorsese has always downplayed the "hero" and emphasized the "villain". That's one of his MO's

Having read the book, I don’t know how well emphasizing the FBI role even translates from the text. Just given the background and context that would need to be included.

I mean, they were terrible fricking people. You don’t have to doctor that up all to portray that with what they did.

It doesn’t sound like they subverted history. Just was a different snapshot at what went on.

They went to Leo to play the FBI role but he wanted the husband so that’s why they rewrote it and changed the focus.

Overall, I thought it was very good. It felt long, but not boring, if that makes sense.

However, I should say I was cringing at the ending. I suspect Scorsese wanted to avoid the typical format of displaying the epilogue via text, but I honestly think that would have been better.
