Unlikely. Sméagol was 500 years old. Any River Hobbits he knew were long dead.

My guess, if they're trying to stay within the storylines...

a matriarch of the Beornings, woodsmen, or some rural part of Dale.

If you recall, Gollum left his caves and creeped around some, before getting caught.
quote:

The Wood-elves tracked him first, an easy task for them, for his trail was still fresh then. Through Mirkwood and back again it led them, though they never caught him. The wood was full of the rumor of him, dreadful tales even among the beasts and birds. The Woodmen said there was some new terror abroad, a ghost that drank blood. It climbed trees to find nests; it crept into holes to find the young; it slipped through windows to find cradles.

He wouldn't have managed this against Elves, but for the Woodmen, it's doable.
Aragorn could have tracked him that way, following leads on that type of thing. And he (and/or Gandalf) could interview people, including mothers etc. That wouldn't make her a 'lead' but just a prominent actress in a small role. And if nothing else, Aragorn could teach her some Ranger stuff to help guard against that happening again.

This story was summed up in a couple paragraphs for a reason. Some stories are ok taking place off screen. This does not need an entire movie.

More LOTR is nice in theory. More LOTR based on no source is not.

It kills me that they can't get the rights to some of Tolkien's 1st Age stuff. There are at least 3 legit blockbusters on the scale of LOTR that could be done, granted with a writer filling in dialogue.
Beren and Luthien, the Fall of Gondolin, and the Children of Hurin all would blow this tale out of the water.

I guess there's 2 concerns; one is that the Estate is leery of destroying his legacy with crap like Rings of Power. The other is that the studios don't trust fans to go see it unless there are hobbits in it. Which is a crying shame.

You all have way more faith than I do.

I hope you all are right

I can’t believe posters try to argue that she is attractive. She’s as homely as an old boot.

With Simon Tolkien in charge? Dude seems hell bent on doing exactly that.

Isn't Peter Jackson involved?

If so, I trust he'll do it justice.

Hobbits don't live to 500. It can't be anyone who knew Smeagol.

This is true if you pretend he didn’t make The Hobbit cash grabs.

He was also in charge of The Hobbit movies which were mediocre at best. Also was an executive producer on LOTR: War of the Rohirrim and claims that movie is cannon (it's not).

I'll reserve judgement before I hear the summary/see a trailer but having Jackson involved doesn't really give me a ton of confidence like it once would have.

Should have been the original trilogy and the Hobbit told in one movie. THat's it. Now we're probably about to get the Gollum Cinematic universe set of movies and have 62 year old Viggo and 86 year old McKellan chasing around Gollum in front of a green screen.

Just wish people could let a good thing lie.

No. Your original post did not say magical. Later in the thread you said that. I didn't have enough interest in this trash to make it past the first page.

I would love them to prove me wrong but almost every single fantasy / sci fi show has been garbage for the last decade.

Not with TV. There's been a ton of good sci fi to come out lately.
