Released in 1995, if this movie had been released nowadays, no one would be able to stop talking about it, methinks. Such a great movie, but released in an era when there was quality film-making going on. Today’s movies are mostly garbage. I was surprised it won only 2 Academy Awards, best editing, and best sound. Are you kidding me?? Yet I haven’t bothered to see what other movies it was competing against at that year’s Oscars.
Anyway, Excellent movie! Now I’m going to watch it again with my three boys!

It was a victim of Tom Hanks fatigue. Philadelphia and Forest Gump were the big winners the previous two years.

Other movies up for awards that came out that year were Sense and Sensibility, Bravehart, Leaving Las Vegas, Toy Story, Nixon, Casino, 12 Monkeys, Bridges of Madison County, The Usual Suspects, Babe, Mr. Holland's Opus and Dead Man Walking. Lot of good movies without critical acclaim that year as well. Clueless, Mallrats, Billy Madison, Seven, Heat, Bad Boys, Jumanji, Friday, Casper, Crimson Tide, Tommy Boy, Die Hard With a Vengence and Ace Ventura When Nature Calls.

Braveheart wrecked shop at the Oscars that year, but Apollo 13 was second in nominations with 9 - it's only real snub was Ron Howard not being nominated for Best Director. Similarly to Gravity, the story was the focus of the movie more than the acting (though Ed Harris got a deserved nom - lost to Spacey for The Usual Suspects) so it didn't stand out as much in competitive categories.

"If they could get a washing machine to fly, my Jimmy could land it"

Great line but I thinik it would have worked better had she said “If they could get a washing machine to fly, your daddy could land it”.
Just something that crossed my mind when watching it. After all , she was trying to comfort her grand-daughter.
But one of my all time favorite movies!

Great movie. For some reason I've always liked the part when Jim talks about his plane losing all his instruments at night on a mission and seeing the algae that gets turned up in the wake of the carrier.

I always felt she was half out of it and may not have even known who her granddaughter was.

I contend this film was the start of nerdiness being cool. The astronauts were the focal point but the engineers were the heroes.

Yes. It’s a great scene, watching the wife react to as she watches......

I remember those were the movies nobody could stop talking about.

The guys loved Heat and Seven.

The women loved Bridges of Madison County and Sense and Sensibility. They LOVED Bridges, it was so huge.

Everyone loved Babe and Toy Story and Braveheart.

I always liked the scene towards the end when they're moving from the LM to the CSM. Lovell sees a piece of duct tape with the word "NO" placed over a switch in the CSM. He asks Jack Swigert why it was there. Swigert tells him it was the switch to undock the LM and CSM and he wanted to make sure he didn't hit it while Lovell and Haise were still in the LM. Lovell just looks at him for a moment and says, "Good idea, Jack."

Any time I need inspiration I watch the scene where they make the adapter for the scrubber using whatever the astronauts have onboard... and come back with a written step by step procedure.

Amazing movie, especially considering how the zero gravity scenes were shot.

I have seen this movie 20 times and I still get teary eyed when the parachutes open at the end. And when the whole control room erupts I lose it.
