I felt the same way after I watched it. Didn’t know who Sharon Tate was or much about the Mason murders.

So I was like wtf is going on in this badass movie.

Googled “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood Explained” and watched a YouTube video on it. Made a whole lot of sense after. So then I watched it again and loved it again.

like some of his other movies, it's mostly about paying homage to various aspects of movie making

And the end didn’t make up for the rest of the movie for me.

The ending was a nice twist for me but didn’t make the movie. I enjoyed it but I’ve always been interested in that time in American history. I was born in the 70’s so I missed it but close enough to be intrigued.

So an interesting story during an interesting time was fun. For me it was a peak into LA movie scene, counter culture, music, cars, fashion. And it was well acted and well written. The ending caught me off guard which was nice.

but what the hell was the point of this movie?

The point is that QT can slap his name on a shite product and still get nominated for all kinds of awards, while Nolan pumps out the “best movie ever seen” every 3 years and has nothing to show for it.

To show as many closeups of Margot Robbie's feet as possible so QT has something to jack off to at night.

If jerking off To Margot Robbie is a crime then arrest us all.

I just don't understand the story Tarantino was trying to tell, that's all.

Okay, the title is "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood", so it's a fairy tale. It covers kind of the same ground Lynch did with Mulholland Drive, albeit from a different angle.

It is a simultaneous homage to the films of Sergio Leone, John Ford, Howard Hawks, etc., actors like John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, but mostly the guys who didn't really hit it big or stay big. Plus the stuntmen who did a lot of hard work for little to no recognition. Plus, it is a statement on the end of the 1960s - that really strange period of time when we were landing on the Moon AND the Manson killings were underway.

A love letter to the Hollywood that wasn't, really, but most folks in the business wish existed. And not just the industry, the city in which QT grew up in.

That's the point.

This is a problem - if you're clued into all that from a historical standpoint, the Manson murders hang over the entire film like an unseen character. The ending has 1000x the impact in my opinion if you're aware of what actually happened.

If you went into the film knowing little to nothing about the Manson Family, then I don't see how the film has anything like the impact intended.

I actually enjoyed it more on second viewing at home. Not saying I didn’t like it when it came out in theaters but I did fell a little let down. Probably something to do with all the hype and build up

I find there to be a direct correlation between a person’s artistic intelligence (or lack thereof) and how oVeRRaTTeD or BoRiNG they think “Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood” is.

Did anyone else think the Kirk Russell/Randy Miller character tied in directly to the Stuntman Mike Death Proof character? Or at least could have had the potential to be had Tarantino been a bit of a forward thinker.

Although the two Zoë Bell characters in the two movies had no parallel whatsoever.

Maybe I missed something but did they kill off Charlie Manson in the movie?

No, Manson wasn't present for the Tate murders, just some of his followers. That guy Tex, who you saw at the Spahn Ranch and then later at the house, looked kind of like Manson so that was a little confusing.

Ace Midnight explained my thoughts on the movie pretty well. In addition, I'd say the core story of the movie was these two buddies hanging together as they struggled with their careers in a changing industry. That part, at least, is fairly realistic and relatable.

I need to watch Death Proof, but Tarantino said that making Death Proof is when he started to get the idea for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. During a break he was watching one of the actors hang out with his stunt man and started thinking about the relationship between an actor and his stunt double.

Also, you done fricked up by not seeing it in the theatre.

If a movie is only good in a theater, then it isn't a good movie.

I feel like if they had taken out the majority of the Leo acting stuff it would have made the movie a lot better.
