All of the accolades and superlatives people use to describe the acting of Deniro, Pacino and, even to a lesser extent, Duvall, are actually, literally true and deserved about Gene Hackman.
The closest modern equivalent is Philip Seymour Hoffman, also RIP.

I watched Runaway Jury, Crimson Tide and Enemy of the State this past weekend. Gene was such a great actor in every role he played.

Totally agree. While Hackman did end on a shitty note with Welcome To Mooseport, he didn’t really water down his work with loads of shite like Pacino and Deniro have done. Hackman knew when to call it quits.
Watched Crimson Tide for the first time in years. He’s criminally underrated in that movie. Amazing performance.
