Joaquin Phoenix signs on to play the Joker in stand alone origin story film

Way back in February we heard that Joaquin Phoenix was in talks to star as The Joker in an upcoming origin movie, and today The Hollywood Reporter says that it’s a done deal.
The Joker will be part of a new brand of DC Comics movies at Warner Bros. and won’t be connected to the DCEU. Instead, it will be a much lower budget movie (in the $55 million range) and “more experimental in tone and content” according to The Hollywood Reporter. The Joker will be an “exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale,” Warner Bros. said.
The Hangover’s Todd Phillips is directing The Joker. He also co-wrote the script with The Fighter’s Scott Silver. We had heard that the legendary Martin Scorsese would be producing the movie, but that news wasn’t confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter today.
The Joker will begin shooting this September in New York City. A release date hasn’t been set at this time.

Yeah, he’ll die afterwards too.

I'm sure one of you comic nerds can correct me... But isn't the appeal of the Joker that he doesn't have an origin?

There's a version of the joker that was a failed stand up comedian and became the Red Hood (not to be confused with the Jason Todd version)

I’ll probably watch it. Just seemed appropriate.

He was forced to be the red hood of the red hood gang. He had to do it or his pregnant wife would get murdered. Well, Batman tried to stop it and inadvertently created the Joker.

I’m sorry. DC is just so bad at building any kind of real universe.

The funny thing about that gif is that in Ancient Rome, the thumbs down actually meant that the losing gladiator got to live.

What part of standalone do you not understand? I am not defending WB here, but at least use facts when bitching

The Joker doesn't really work without Batman. The whole point of the character is to be the complete antithesis of Batman.
This is a baaddd idea, as he can't carry his own film/arc without really reqwriting the character.

This I agree with.

Batman 89 was the Jokers origin story.

They invented the comic universe.

He would play better Lex Luthor than Jesse Eisenberg

Not even close.
The Dark Knight got it right. Conflicting origins leaving the audience with no real answer.

That benchmark will never be met again. Heath Ledger became a real-life Joker imo.

I get what you're saying but this could work. Phoenix picks good roles, so it's possible this has a strong script that really sold him.

Phoenix is talented enough to do Joker, but i think there will be issues beyond him. who is asking for a Joker origin? what is Joker without Batman? And even though it’s a stand-alone movie, we’ve just seen Joker in suicide squad and DC is trying to build it’s universe. This might confuse casual movie goers and in any event does nothing to build the DCU. It might clash with what DCU is trying to do.

I'm so fricking sick of movie companies having a hard on for "gritty" films.

Rumor is they're getting away from a shared universe and just making stand alone films. I actually think that's the right idea.
