Laura, today's third place contestant, is giving some good insights over on the Jeopardy subreddit. Nate and herself strategized to beat James before they went on.

quote:

Nothing terribly revolutionary, but we knew that the only way to beat James was to play the game his way. So we resolved to make searching for the DDs our first priority, and promised that if we got one, no matter our confidence level or how much money we had, we’d make it a true DD. You absolutely have to take uncomfortable risks to beat James, no doubt about it.

Nate didn't follow through with making his second DD a TDD, costing him the game.

I think James needed $61,000 to break the 2M mark.

I assume he didn't make that much today???

(It's ok to spoil it for me. I'm going to miss the 6:00 broadcast here in NOLA bc of work)

This guy is my hero right now. Him going out into the crowd and telling the guys kid how proud he should be of his dad.....

He's Jennings with advanced game strategy.

Great point. It's really close but I think that's true; Nate would have been up by around $1,000 going into the final question if my memory is right.

James seemed really off his game in the first round. Not sure if Nate was just faster with the buzzer or James was unsure of the categories.

Seeing as there are zero spoilers out there (that I know of), it's safe to assume that James swept through the filming schedule and is sitting around 60 wins right now.

Nate had game for sure.

It would have been really interesting to see how Final would have played out had he taken the true DD and gone in with a lead.

James going all in and nailing it like two questions after Nate didn’t really swung the game. Felt like he got his mojo back after that.

Still blown away that James is AVERAGING more than the previous single day record, which Alex pointed out yesterday.

Just impressive as hell.

James is killing it again today.

After the 1st round, he already is at $24,600

2nd place is at $2,200 and bring up the rear is Susan with -$600

I’d rather see anybody but him get them. I don’t care what asinine number he bets dedicated to whatever fart face he knows to boost his score. Ultimately it kind of warms my heart when people go hunting for them but don’t ever get them.

James is a cheat code. Didn’t break own record but close. No players missed a question.

He’s still quite a long way from Jennings’ all-time cash winnings, but Jennings’ record from when he was just a regular contestant before all his return trips in those special episodes should be James’ by either Friday or Monday at the latest.

He’s at a few bucks below $2.2 million. Jennings’ record is $3.5 but $2.5 as a regular contestant.

Just a heads up: James will only need $37,000 plus change next Monday to pass $2.5 million.

SPOILER FOR TODAYS EPISODE

Well, the fun is over. Episode actually leaked on Saturday and I was unfortunate to run into the spoiler that day. As the episode has now started to air in some markets media sites are picking up on it. I'm floored that no one leaked this weeks ago. I was expecting the ride to outlast the filming schedule.

While James is definitely one of the more intelligent players ever, there is no doubt he owes his success to daily doubles, and his luck finally ran out. Emma was able to control the board enough to find BOTH daily doubles in Double Jeopardy. She went all in on the first and played it safe with $3k on the second. Overcoming your opponent who wagered everything on a DD is tough if you can't find one for yourself. When this happened two weeks ago James was able to go on a tear with what was left on the board and take the lead before final jeopardy, but Emma and the third place contestant (who played well in his own right) were good enough to prevent James from going all out. Came this close to Ken's winnings record.

There will be a lot of discussion regarding James' bet, but it was actually a pretty smart move. He knew Emma would go all in, as a result James bet just enough to prevent the third place contestant from sneaking in and getting a win. His hope of course, was that Emma would not known the answer. I'm sure his heart sank when Shakespeare popped up knowing Emma is a Librarian.

At least we know James will be back in some capacity in the future. Will Jeopardy pull a twist with the next Tournament of Champions and get the all time greats back to go up against James? Maybe send Alex out with a retirement tournament?

Oh, and the Kingslayer Emma once wrote a a Master's paper on Jeopardy. She is no ordinary player. Read below.

James definitely changed how Jeopardy is played from now on but remember to give Ken Jennings his due.

His win streak is all the more incredible if the spoiler is true and Holzhauer didn't even make it halfway.
