Twitter in 08-09 was a much different place than it is today. It wasn't filled with trolls and PC police. His friends either laughed or ignored it and went on with their lives.
People would say some really dumb, random shite just to get noticed. I'm not saying using pedophilia as a vehicle for attention is forgivable, just that you're not wrong in your assessment of twitter back then. And honestly, Idgaf about the tweets and I dislike that he was fired over them.

ETA: Twitter was just another private-ish social network where you followed friends and maybe a couple famous people. It's not the beast that it is now.

shock value =/= funny

I don't think rape jokes are funny either, but Family Guy writers made a fortune making jokes like that.
Shock value.
Um, also, Family Guy had an actual pedophile on its show all the time.
Those things were more common a few years back, before PC thinkers really came down on them.

And yet, I don't see Seth McFarlane fired from stuff much.

If you’re going to tell an inappropriate joke at least make it funny. These were borderline cringy.

Twitter...

Say something profound, it is remember for a few days.

Say something stupid, and it will come back years later.

If you're famous, you are WAY better off just staying off of it.

Cringy can be funny. See the post above. FG is a good example of a way to make it work.

Well yeah, but pedophiles were the butt of those jokes, not children.

Well, now we're getting into intent; and I don't want to just guess.

But I'm like 95% sure it was for shock value.
Smart? No.
Tasteful? Certainly not.
Worth getting fired over ten years later? Eh.

If you're doing anything that even remotely incorporates a public profile/presence, don't post stupid or offensive things on the Internet. That people didn't understand that in 2008 when it's been true since the 90s is hardly an excuse.

Most of the cast and crew really liked Gunn. This spells bad news for GOTG 3

RIP GotG3. Not sure who else i trust to make that flick. I'd trust Wheedon, but they burned that bridge.

You know what you’re getting when you watch FG, and in the right setting, sure it can work. Gunn’s tweets come across as weird.

He's also married to Pam.

I don't know why I'm bringing that up, but it seems relevant.

There’s no reason for rivisionist history here. The internet was a very different place 10 years ago. Just look at this site. Lots of people had their own names as their sn and freely let people know who they were. You can’t even do that on twitter these days.

They come across horribly. I’m not defending the context. Just that it wasn’t anything anyone gave a shite about for 10 years for a reason.

That's not revisionist, that's ignorance. I've known since the days of dial-up BBS not to use my real name. What moron comes on here saying, "I'm Brian Stevens, and let me tell you jokes about raping people and fondling children!"
