Why does it need to be characters from Gilligan's Island? He could just make the movie with other characters.

Same reason they can't do one of the proper Black Kryptonians from the comics, or Highway to Heaven with another white guy.

Charlie Kaufman is suffering from mental problems. They started to manifest with some of the bizarre notes in Synechdoche NY, but clearly have overtaken him based on Anomalisa and I'm Thinking of Ending Things.
All he's got listed in the works is producing "The Actor" with Ryan Gosling:
Sounds like a touch of the Twilight Zone episode "Nick of Time" where a New Yorker spends a bizarre day in a rural Ohio town. The episode was actually one of William Shatner's acting highlights. He carries the entire episode.

Why not be a fun offshoot of a wholesome idea people already know? I don’t see a problem with it, in fact I think it sounds pretty fun.
