UPDATED: James Cameron will make four “Avatar” sequels, promising that the films will start hitting theaters in 2018.
The creator of the original “Avatar,” the 2009 fantasy epic that remains the all-time worldwide box office champion, said that his vision for a followup has expanded over time.
He first envisioned two sequels. But after meeting with a team of four screenwriters and a group of “some of the top artists and designers in the world,” he realized that he had way too much material for just two films. He initially decided on three sequels, then jumped to four.
“So far, what I am seeing in pure imagination is far beyond the first film,” Cameron said. He said that very few people have seen the initial concepts, but a select few have been left “speechless” by what they saw.
“We have decided to embark on a truly massive cinematic project, making four epic films, each of which stands alone but together forms a complete saga,” Cameron said. His announcement came immediately after the director told theater owners he opposes the proposal by Sean Parker’s upstart Screening Room, to bring movies into customers’ homes at the same time they debut in theaters.
In further support of the first-run theatrical experience, Cameron added of the “Avatar” sequels: “Trust me, these are films that were designed to be seen in theaters and on the big screen first.”
The other three films will be released at Christmas-time in 2020, 2022 and 2023. “That is our game plan,” Cameron said.
“The next time I see you will be on Pandora,” Cameron told the theater owners, referring to the mythical land he created with “Avatar.”

He's acting like the world sees Avatar like it sees Star Wars.
I don't know anyone that cares at all about the Avatar universe. It was a decent movie on its own. I know that I personally have no questions leftover from the film. Just like my childhood was fine not having more insight on the Fern Gully universe.

Does he have plans for Neytiri to lose her necklace in any of them? I want to know if her nipples are navy blue.

I'm pretty sure that exists somewhere on the Internet already.

James Cameron doesn't do what James Cameron does for James Cameron. James Cameron does what James Cameron does because James Cameron is... James Cameron.

I'll believe it when I see it.

He's going to have to come up with some good plot lines. The visual effects aren't going to carry another film much less 4 more.

i don't understand the circlejerk of hate for this movie.
I agree the story and characters were pretty average but it was one hell of a visual and cinematic experience.
Why are people acting like James Cameron isn't a great director and won't improve on the flaws of the original?

Who hates it?
I think everyone agrees that it was pretty average, which is why people are laughing at this announcement. Avatar was a decent movie. It wasn't Star Wars, Indiana Jones, The Matrix, or Lord of the Rings. No one has been posting on forums or reading the latest news hoping to see when the sequels would finally be announced.

I'll be honest, it has potential. Independent, stand alone, plots that converge to create an epic story is something that I absolutely love in a written Fantasy series. It's something that has been done in novels but has never really been presented cinematically.
I'm excited about this, it's going to be boom or bust for sure.

I liked Avatar a lot. I think I saw it in theaters like three times when it was out.
Granted, I think dishing out a sequel nine years later is pretty dumb, I'm assuming it's lost a ton of steam by now. I'll definitely see it, but I wouldn't be surprised if it sucks.
