The mini-series was ok. Different as it could be from the Kubrick version. Much, much closer to the book.
Rebecca De Mornay was hot. The cheap "special" effects would make it look like a Scifi Channel movie now..

This is going to probably be such an easy and stupid question to answer so sorry in advance. but what's the deal with teh final scene in the movie with jack's picture on the wall from like the 1930s?

I get that ghosts of bad things past in the hotel (grady murdering people, the 2 girls in the hall, weird shite in the rooms, etc) still linger around. I get that jack ultimately went mad, so presumably his "ghost" will now forever be in hotel lore as well. But the picture on the wall is from the 30s..how does that make sense? I'm assuming there's some kind of jack/ghost/hotel angle that's right in front of me that I'm missing, I just don't get the timeline of how jack would be at that party from the 30s.

No he wasn't. He broke Danny's arm when he was drunk once. That was the extent of his abuse towards his wife or son.

It's just meant to show that he's part of the hotel now. A piece of lore.

Kubrick has talked about this actually. I don't like it but basically it's suggesting reincarnation.

Hotel was basically possessing spirits/souls. The more it got the more "powerful" it became. The hotel wanted Danny due to his "talents", and Jack was the vehicle for that. Jack in the photo at the end is just a way to show the audience that he is now part of the hotel.

What doesn't come across in the Kubrick movie is that Jack himself has some of the abilities of his son. That ,plus his own personal demons, are what make him an easy target to be possessed by the hotel.
The book is a slow burn that in some ways, does not work for a movie. Example - Jack finding albums, newspaper articles of the hotels history. Obsessing over them more & more. That was shown in the mini-series.

Jack's performance in this was awesome. Movie is legit. The interations between Jack and the hotel and Wendy are gold.

That's a great documentary except for the "we never landed on the moon" nut jobs. The Shining is a masterpiece.

Stephen King on Kubrick's movie--

quote:

"The book is hot, and the movie is cold; the book ends in fire, and the movie in ice. In the book, there's an actual arc where you see this guy, Jack Torrance, trying to be good, and little by little he moves over to this place where he's crazy. And as far as I was concerned, when I saw the movie, Jack was crazy from the first scene. I had to keep my mouth shut at the time. It was a screening, and Nicholson was there. But I'm thinking to myself the minute he's on the screen, 'Oh, I know this guy. I've seen him in five motorcycle movies, where Jack Nicholson played the same part.' And it's so misogynistic. Wendy Torrance is just presented as this sort of screaming dishrag."

He ain't wrong.

If I was trapped with Wendy for 3 months I'd go postal too.

Mr. Torrance has always been the caretaker.

The scene with Jack and Grady in the bathroom is one of the greatest scenes in film.

That's bullshite. Neither happened in either book or movie. Jack hurts Danny one time. And then he decides to return. Jack never touched Wendy.

This.... I think?

Jack breaks Danny's arm. Shaking him I believe because danny was being bad? I believe verbal abuse toward Wendy is always suggested I think.
