I've seen it more times than I can remember and it still holds up. It's in my top 5 movies of all time, along with The Godfather, Chinatown, On the Waterfront, and The Wizard of Oz.
Strong list....is "It's a Wonderful Life" in 6th place?

I've never seen it either. Citizen Kane as well.

I've always wanted to watch them, but it just seems like every time it crosses my mind to watch either one, I do t have the time or there is something else I want to watch first. I need to make a point of watching g one, or both, soon.

It was crazy hearing this line when I first watched it because I had heard it a ton of times and had no idea it was from Casablanca.

Lotta old movies get TV runs but I also have not seen many classics in their original form. Hell, I’ve forgotten the opening scenes to more up to date movies too.

I’ll rewatch a movie I’ve seen a dozen times on cable or streaming and then realize “ oh yeah, that’s how it started “.

Or like Gandalf “ I have no memory of this scene “

I'm aware of some scenes like Here's looking at you kid, and Play it again Sam. I'm afraid to watch the movie because of all the universal praise and hype, like if it's not the best movie I've ever seen I will be disappointed.

Casablanca is great. Its simple, nothing crazy just to the point great scenes with a perfect balance of humor and emotion. What I love about it is that it doesnt miss at any point. Every scene is great. You arent gonna be dwelling on it for hours after seeing it, youll just be entertained in the moment and glad you watched it.

*Its my favorite movie

If i were stuck on a desert island, and could only have one movie to watch for the rest of my life, it would be Casablanca.

i had this for many years because 99% of the movies i watched growing up were recorded off TV with various scenes cut for random reasons or we missed the first few minutes before hitting record

I just finished it. It's a good movie. But nothing close to goat status.

Just for reference, what is on your “goat” list?

If that was your impression of Casablanca (mine was similar) I would not recommend Citizen Kane.

In no particular order, just a few off the top of my head:

Jaws
Slingblade
Happy Gilmore
Raising Arizona
Goodfellas
Rain Man
Reservoir Dogs
Glengarry
Team America

ETA- I think It's a Wonderful Life is my favorite "classic" movie. Jimmy, Barrymore, Donna Reed, so good. And the guy who plays Clarence.

I may need to watch it again. Many movies I am meh the first time I see it, then the more I see it the more I appreciate it. I'm still slightly confused about the plot twist at the end, the beginning of a beautiful friendship deal.

watch it again, it should become more clear

*****worlds most well-known spoiler below*****

its funny to hear it described as a plot twist, but it really is one of the all time great cinematic story arcs, its just that its entered so thoroughly into popular culture that we’ve forgotten that everything was pointing to Rick and Ilsa ending up together

hell, Victor even gave Rick permission

and Louis giving up his corrupt amoral ways at the end was a great payoff as well

The "neutral" American and Vichy French officer are going to fight the Nazis. Ric and Ilsa are sacrificing their love to fight the Germans. Ric and Louis are giving up everything, despite the movie telling you they wouldn't do something like that, up to that point.
