There were 400K people on that beach. For whatever reason, Nolan decided showing about 500 was enough.

Historical estimates range from 800-1000 private boats came to the rescue. It was incredibly brave and dramatic, overwhelming really. For whatever reason, Nolan thought showing 5 boats coming to the rescue would suffice.

It was a bit of a letdown. I understand if he didn’t want to use cgi, I’m for that philosophy. But he couldn’t find it in the budget or think it necessary to rent maybe at least 50 boats? Maybe hire an extra thousand extras to stand and sit on the beach?

No sense of the fight and desperation to hold the Germans back, only a minute token scene at the beginning where you see 3 or so Brits manning a nest. I never got that sense of urgency or panic to get out of there; there never seemed to be a sense that the lines could break at any moment. We sure didn’t see it.

Now Saving Private Ryan and the D-Day beach scene, it had urgency, uncertainty, panic, overwhelming and impending danger, violence, desperation, savagery. Frankly, it blows Dunkirk out of the water, no pun intended.

I loved the performances, the sound, the cinematography of it. And I did like it. It’s a good, not great, movie. There are bits in there where it gets close to the cusp of reaching greatness. But it failed to meet its mark. I thought Nolan could have and should have done better.

Dunkirk was good, but it didn't really knock my socks off.

I personally believe that SPR was done so well, most directors believe it is the pinnacle and can't be outdone. So, they don't try.
They tell war stories in a different way, focus on the periphery, use different techniques, spend more time on background events, whatever.
But they know they'll never capture the true grit and experience like SPR did.
And we should know and expect it too.
Spielberg changed the genre.

Spr was so good the VA had to make special programs for all the ww2 vets having episodes after seeing it. It was that real.

I'm a ww2 buff, tons of books, watch every documentary.
I had a hard time staying awake in Dunkirk. I don't get the hype.

Exactly. Very poorly executed IMO. Hopefully the movie about Churchill will be better.

Put it like this.

I don't really need to see Dunkirk again.
In sure I'll watch justice league and The Last Jedi again.

Dunkirk was a good film (Great cinematography). But I can think of 5+ films from 2017 that are better than it.

I haven't seen Dunkirk yet (will get to it this weekend) but what movies do you think are better?

The idea and execution of the feeling of said idea was done so well. The writing and the plots were a little jerky for me. I thought the Cillian Murphy on a boat scene was just fricking stupid. It really took me out of the movie, especially the outcome. They had better ways of demonstrating the peril of civilians than doing what they did and it was such a big part of the movie.

That actually hurts me to say because Nolan is pretty much a god to me in this industry. His recent run of Inception, Interstellar, Dunkirk is incredible. Making hundreds of millions and creating critically acclaimed blockbusters without having to cheese out and use brand recognition. He’s unparalleled.

ETA: everyone whining about pace and boredom doesn’t understand the point of the movie. It’s supposed to be boring. Not every day in war is filled with action packed battles. Nolan was trying to show it in its reality, but the movie missed the mark because Hollywood elements were added in. They had to have their stupid drama.

They showed way, way more than 5 boats. The criticism of now showing enough people on the beach is correct though

It was a good movie but Lady Bird, Three Billboards, etc. were better.

Finally watched Dunkirk last night. The cinematography was excellent, but the movie overall was meh. The end where the English pilot puts it on the beach when he could have easily ditched near the boats after shooting down the last german plane was too much Hollywood and not enough actual life. Had some good scenes but overall it was an OK movie and did not live up to the hype IMO.

I think there's a real distinction from the people who saw the film in a theater, especially an IMax-type, and then people who saw it at home.

In the theater, the movie just absolutely blows you away and you're numb when you come out of the cinema... Like you've just been on an amusement park ride and it was the greatest thing you've ever seen.

The home experience simply can't do that and I think the films so-called flaws are highlighted.

I'm glad others are on board about this movie. When it first came out and I pointed out its many flaws (it's not a good movie) the Nolan fanboys went crazy.

Well it wasn't a "war" movie. It was a survival movie during war time.

Regardless of how good it may or may not be, I wouldn’t vote for it entirely because of its lack of diversity.

I can name no female/people of color speaking parts. You can’t convince me there were ZERO instances of valor and bravery by these groups that weren’t worthy of mention in this film.

It’s just more misogynist white-washed history being shoved down our throats.

Luckily I’m on the right side of history. Which side are you on?

It was never meant to be watched at home. Live Gravity, Dunkirk depends upon the movie theater experience to make its impact felt.
