I'll pick and choose which things from the books need to be in the movies, and disregard the rest as unimportant.

Thank you very much.

Daniel Craig's appearance and background looks absolutely NOTHING like the literary description of Bond
Actually aside from the hair Craig, with his craggy face, comes the closest to suggesting the Bond of the books.

In the opening of Casino Royale Fleming wrote that Bond resembles this man:

Which was an indirect way for Fleming to say Bond looked like him:

But there's only one actor who should be the next James Bond, and that's Idris Elba."

Because it's time?

Nowadays that's usually the reason blacks are chosen for things they've never done before.

Because it's time.

Maybe Tom Hardy can play black panther in the next marvel movie. It's time.

Daniel Craig doesn't fit with Ian Fleming's description...

He’s also too young to have done much in the Cold War. (Since we’re sticking to Fleming’s Bond.)

its a time stamped role during the cold war where the person is a highly trained secret agent of the british government.

So every Bond film was during the cold war area?

No, of course not. So if they're willing to modernize it based on current times and tech why does it matter if the guy is white or not?

Well, shite.

If we're going to go that route then what's stopping us from having a Japanese Clark Kent or an Indian Bruce Wayne? These characters, created during the Great Depression, have advanced with the times. If they're willing to modernize the universe these characters live in based on current times and tech, why does it matter if either of those characters are white or not?

Perhaps it doesn't matter. But I think it foolish to change the skin color of an established character simply because "it's time."

It doesnt. there are very few roles where a person's "whiteness" is a defining characteristic that informs motivations, thoughts, and actions. superman or batman could absolutely be portrayed with minority actors without it changing anything about the character.

its why the Black Panther attempt at a "gotcha" earlier in this thread was so dumb. there are times when a character's race are super important, but most of the time it doesnt matter.

its also why the Natalie Portman backlash over Annihilation was so dumb. just because theres a throwaway line in the book about her being asian doesnt mean that the character's motivations were written as being defined by her heritage. Same with Ghost in the Shell.

i get the want to knee-jerk against SJW ideology, but id say save the real outrage when they decide to cast the next bond as a pan-sexual hermaphrodite.

I agree with you.

However, the character of James Bond has been portrayed by a caucasian actor for over 60 years going all the way back to the CBS Movie of the Week in 1954. There is a history and legacy there.

I don't see why you need to re-cast the role with a minority actor other than wanting to drum up publicity. And if you're going to do it, why the hell would you cast someone who is only a few years away from the age of 50?
