Unforgiven

Tombstone wasn't real good IMO
The Assassination of Jesse James is the best pure modern western.
Django is a "southern" as Tarantino described it
Lonesome Dove and Unforgiven are #1 and #2 if we're going that far back. I was assuming mid 90's-present

Silverado has been my favorite since I was little.
I really liked the new 3:10 to Yuma as well.

This. And I'd actually put Quigley Down Under in my Top 5 along with Unforgiven, Tombstone and 3:10 to Yuma.

Quigley was one I left off. Damn good movie.

Tombstone is good but not as good as Unforgiven. I liked the new True Grit a lot as well. No Country For Old Men is up there too though maybe not technically a western.

Unforgiven and Tombstone are the best since 1990 in that order.
Wyatt Erp sucked. Costner was a horrible Erp.

I'll agree with you on that and the fact that Appaloosa was a pretty decent flick. And an actual Western.

To some extent I'd agree with you, although it had its "poignant" moments. I enjoyed the hell out of it but don't consider it a great "western".
Post 1990, I'd say:
Unforgiven
The Assassination of Jesse James, etc.
Open Range (maybe . . .)

Tombstone is very quotable and entertaining, but it is over the top and seems exaggerated to the point of being unbelievable.
Unforgiven is just a great film. Easily the best western in decades.

It's not really a question if you look at Unforgiven and Tombstone. I think Open Range was better than Tombstone as well. I liked Tombstone, don't get me wrong, but really it was Doc/Val Kilmer.
I'll have to check Appaloosa out.

Agreed. Silverado, Unforgiven, and Tombstone would definitely be my top 3 in the last 30 years at any rate.

Actually, the further I get from that movie the more I dislike it. It's just a bunch of Western cliches strung together. Phony.

I love the part in Open Range in the bar when Kevin Cosner slides the beer mug and hits the bar tender in the head.
Very similar to when Robert Duval beats up the bar tender in Lonesome Dove.

That's kinda the point of the flick.
