Sorry but the assassination of JJ wasn't that good IMO. It had potential, but it didn't get there. Like I said the Original True Grit was great, and the remake was too, but it wasn't John Wayne. Ultimately it appears as thought the consensus is Unforgiven then the rest, which I agree with but I believe the gap between Tombstone and the others is larger than the gap between it and Unforgiven. Just my 2 cents.

I haven't seen the Assassination of JJ from start to finish, but what I have seen I liked.
One of the most realistic westerns I have seen.

Edit; Caey Afflick plays a very good Robert Ford.

Fast forward Wyatt Earp to when he grows the 'stache and it's the best.

And I'll get hate for this but I liked The Quick anand the Dead.

Other than Leonardo diCaprio - It was a good movie. Sam Raimi does a western... What's not to love? Nice twist towards the end.

ETA:

That explosion is a great one for the home theater system.

The quick and the dead is a very good movie, just not top 5 worthy IMO.

Best performance in a modern western but the title goes to unforgiven

To each his own, but like I said, Assassination had LOTS of potential, but it didnt get there. Maybe that's part of why I didn't dig it, it had a TON of hype.

not as good as the likes of... Original True Grit, Butch Cassidy, Magnificent Seven and Outlaw Josey Wales

Gotta draw a line there - it's not only as good, I think it's better than the rest of your edited list quoted here (I took out Good,Bad,Ugly because I agree it stands alone)... Except I gotta add in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence and (for fun and giggles) Cat Ballou.

What say you?
I say since 1990, for me it's Tombstone and Unforgiven standing alone.

I love Tombstone. My top 5 are as follows:

1) Tombstone/Lonesome Dove
2) Butch Cassidy & Sundance Kid
3) Outlaw Josey Wales
4) Open Range
5) Lawless? Could that be considered a Western or a Gangster?

Well I would disagree that it's better than Josey, True Grit and Butch Cassidy but I am a John Wayne (TG) guy and butch Cassidy is great. Josey Wales is in the category with Good Bad and Ugly.

The line I was drawing was simply the time it came out.

IMO Unforgiven is the best modern western. Tombstone is the most watchable modern western.

I also like True Grit, Dances w/ Wolves, 3:10 to Yuma (very entertaining and underrated), and Legends of the Fall (if you count that as a western).

Yes it's TV but someone has to say this: Deadwood is the best western since Unforgiven.
