Sorry but the assassination of JJ wasn't that good IMO. It had potential, but it didn't get there. Like I said the Original True Grit was great, and the remake was too, but it wasn't John Wayne. Ultimately it appears as thought the consensus is Unforgiven then the rest, which I agree with but I believe the gap between Tombstone and the others is larger than the gap between it and Unforgiven. Just my 2 cents.

TAoJJbtCRF is the best western of the past 15 years. The Proposition, Appolosa, Open Range, and the 3:10 to Yuma and True Grit remakes are the only ones in the debate for that time period. (Havent seen Django)

Tombstone is a fantastic popcorn western. Very fun, quotable and has memorable characters. Westerns is my favorite genre, and Tombstone is up near the top for me.

Unforgiven is terribly overrated. I used to like it a good bit, and I still like it, but not nearly as much as I used to.

Also the original True Grit is terrible. The new True Grit came out and all of a sudden the John Wayne True Grit was one of the best westerns of all time. I don't care how good the new one is it won't be as good as the original ect. Mattie is almost unbearable to watch in that, some terrible child acting. Give me Jeff Bridges Rooster Cognurn all day. Bridges actually acted, John Wayne played himself as usual.

I disagree on TAoJJbtCRF being hte best, but that's a preference thing. the only movie i disagree with on your list open range.

absolutely. it's a good movie, but not near what everyone thinks it is.

Unforgiven.

However, if we are counting "Southern's"

Then Django Unchained.

Unforgiven is the only answer... the gap between it and the rest is enormous.

Anyone that says Django Unchained, is a mouth breather...

And of course the abortion that is Tombstone will get thrown out there... that movie is so cheese dick. "I'm ya huckleberry." STFU Mad Mardigan

I'll give some props to The Proposition, I like it a lot.

i dont see how it gets so much praise. every single Western cliché in the book. only redeeming quality was the landscapes (which are shite compared to Proposition's)

There are a lot of "enjoyable" westerns that have been made in the modern day (whatever arbitrary date you attach to that). If I were going for landscapes and cinematography I'd say Seraphim Falls is right up there with the best. The movie itself wasn't good though.

Also had great sound for the gun battles. I don't think it was bad, not great, but definitely not an "abortion"

I'm downloading The Proposition now. Don't know how I missed this if everyone likes it so much..

It's an Aussie movie, John Hillcoat (Directed The Road and Lawless) directed it.
