in the 90s we had
Angel
Bram Stokers Dracula
Buffy The Vampire Slayer
Dark Shadows Reboot
Forever Knight
Interview With The Vampire

then when 2008 rolled around we had
the Twilight saga
Vampire Diaries
True Blood
The Originals

we haven't really had any vampires on tv or in cinemas since March 10th 2017 when the Vampire Diaries aired its final episode and The Originals is currently in its final season as well

Throw Van Helsing and Underworld in there somewhere. Probably an Underworld in '08 since there's so many of them.

Edit: Rise of the Lycans didn't come out til '09.

I suspect you are only retroactively calling those events in the 90s a vampire craze because to equate that with the media saturation that was occurring during the Twilight years is just silly.

folks hate the twilight saga because of the sparkling crap right? I admit that part was dumb it cant be that folks hate vamps being out in the sun in Stokers original novel Dracula was able to move around in daylight he just wasn't as powerful as he would be at night. I don't know where the whole "Vamps only come out at night" came from

I think the derision is from shitty writing that somehow became WORSE in the film translation (see Rifftrax for more).

And less the surviving the sun and more the glitter bomb.

Uhh...

The reason was more obvious:

People didn't want to watch that for 2 hours...pensive? brooding? concerned? tired? confused?

The range of emotions for 2 hours in the same face can be bewildering to the movie-goer. Did she forget her lines?

A big part of the 90s stuff was the influence of Anne Rice. The books were very big before the Cruise/Pitt movie was released.

Yeah. The "vampire craze" has been going on for decades, from the original silents like "Nosferatu" to the Universals to the Hammer stuff and Dark Shadows to Anne Rice (with a stopover at stuff like 'Near Dark' and 'The Lost Boys') straight up to the 90s discussed above. The only difference lately is basically a couple iterations, mostly Twilight, that really seemed to upset people, mostly young males. Granted, Twilight was an abomination, and the writing was absolutely awful, but it really didn't have much effect on the general vampire lore in the media. Some, but nothing else that came close to its popularity. (And the trend of YA novels dominating the movie industry was around before Twilight, so it can't be blamed for that either.)

The YA craze was supernatural romance, not just vampires (thought Twilight got most of the attention). Publishers found out they could make a mint off selling, essentially, long form masturbatory comic books for teenage girls (and teenage girls at heart).

I heard multiple people in the publishing industry say "Mermaids are the next big thing" like 3 years in a row.

It will be back. Just like Count Dracula you can't keep vampires down forever. With zombies being on their way out some other supernatural critter will get their chance to be the next big thing.
