Is “Sweet Home Alabama” the progenitor of Hallmark Christmas movies?

I caught some of “Sweet Home Alabama” on tv the other day. I hadn’t seen it since around the time it first came out. I had remembered it being a decent rom com with some heart, but as I watched it, I realized that it followed the exact same pattern of a Hallmark Christmas movie:
1. Busy city girl comes to her rural idealic small town
2. She reconnects with a ruggedly handsome old flame whom she starts out hating
3. There’s an adorable small town festival in the square
4. She leaves her boring city man for the rugged handiman country boy

Literally the only things missing are Santa, a cute kid, and Gretchen Weiners.

So you're saying Reese Witherspoon is to blame?

The only thing missing is that the city man isn't a piece of shite. He didn't really do anything wrong in movie. His mom was just a bitch.

She is to be thanked for giving us yearly movies with Lacey Chabert, Jill Wagner, Taylor Cole, Erin Krakow, Jen Lilly, Nikki DeLoach. All Hallmark hotties.

Not exactly the same plot, but couldn’t we say Doc Hollywood predated SHA?

Only miss was that Melanie wasn't in marketing but she was an up and coming fashion designer.

SHA is not big city girl goes to small town. It is the small town girl moves to big city and becomes all uppity, then has to go back to hometown for some reason then the rest happens. DH is Big city goes to small town and falls in love and stays in small town.

She goes back because she has to get divorced.

Never said it was bad. It’s a solid rom com. I just feel really sorry for the mayor’s son. They should have at least had some kind of throwaway scene where one of the Alabama girls comforts him after the wedding so it’s hinted that he ends up with a happy ending. Dude gets absolutely destroyed in this movie while doing literally nothing wrong.

I think the credits have a bunch of news headlines and one indicates he marries some New York socialite or something.

I know the plot of SHA. I was referring to the Hallmark trope.

The girl he marries talks to his mom at the wedding and says she's a "Vanderbilt". All of the actresses other scenes were cut but she was supposed to be Reese's assistant/friend.
